Treenymph, I fished the TFEO/Lexus team event on Saturday and fishing was back to its best!! The lovely warm condistions through last week meant water was alive with buzzers of all knids but with a plentiful showing of grenadiers!
Result was most caught fish on floaters and nymphs and cracking fish they were too, with plenty of browns and rainbows in the 2 - 3.5lb range. Fortunately fish were pretty well spread and with no concentrations of stockies fishing this comp was a joy!!
They will stock before the Anglian/Fulling will on Saturday but if conditions remain there will again be some great fishing.

Well done. I heard that it fished really well form the boats. The bank is still struggling though, as is Blagdon C.B

Maybe at last we have plausible theory for the poor bank fishing at Chew ( and Blagdon). In his latest Bristol Water report (8 May), Bob Handford admits that Bank anglers have found things quite tough, a combination of very clear water over newly flooded bank from the lake having risen steadily for the past couple of months ... Where the bank fishermen access deep water, Nunnery & North Shore, they have managed to catch, but fish seem to be avoiding the shallower areas in the clear water This seems like a plausible explanation to me. The water is extremely clear at the moment and any fish venturing into shallow water must make themselves more vulnerable to Cormorants and Pike. However, this would not be a problem at the Barrows which are very deep and seem to have consistently fished well from the start. Any views? Allrounder ;D

the water is very clear at the tanks allrounder and like you say you are fishing over deep water.may be some truth in it.im thinking more towards daphina preoccuping the trout + the fish seem to be taking deeper as me and c.b found the other day on no 1.alll fish caught on the point or 2nd dropper on 15-20 ft leaders.hope that makes some sense.cheers.blondie

If it is still daphnia then they are still preoccupied by it ... I spent a couple of hours fishing from the Woodford bank last night. It was a lovely evening with a gentle ripple with the light wind blowing over my right shoulder which although a little awkward, was easily coped with. There was lots of fly life in the grass behind me and also a small hatch of small buzzers including the occasional 'kingsize' buzzer up to an inch long. It should have fished well but I never had a pull all evening on any of the usual suspects (buzzers, diawl bachs, pheasant tail nymphs, caddis flies etc). Nor was there much activity on the surface - I saw just 3 fish move all evening. For anyone going out in a boat in the next couple of days - most of them seemed to be fishing between Denny Island and the North Shore. I couldn't see how they were doing though. Allrounder ;D

I can remember slow start for the bank years ago during a very cold spring with consistent cold easterly winds right through April and May.
As a boat angler we found success fishing the deeper water, off North Shore, across either end of Denny and around the spit off the picnic area by the dam.
Fish were caught on superglue buzzers on tiemco 2457 size 8 on the wetcel clear intermediate (Slime line). Tactic was to cast out and just keep in touch, gathering line as boat drifted. Takes almost wrenched the rod from your hands and fish were in great condition and stuffed to the gills with large buzzers.
Could it be the cold conditions kept them deep early on and once the fly activity starts they remain there picking the buzzers off as they emerge, with teh result they stay 'heads down' for longer ?
Certainly seems the fish this year are feeding heavily at around the 10' - 12' contours which is where I caught fish along with others last weekend, despite great hatches of fly that would on other years have brought them to the top?

i fished nunnery yesterday for a couple of hours in the evening, despite the quantity of anglers, there was a lack of fish showing, and many including me failed to catch a fish.
I did have a couple of pulls, and a swirl at a dry, but failed to connect with any of them.
What made my trip good was the fact is saw a MONSTER perch right beneath my feet, it started feeing and looking round the rocks. I recon it was about 6lbs!!!
I had never seen anything like it before!
I am not put off and shall be out there again ASAP!

I remember those lovely drifts off the ends of Dennys, where have they gone!!
I'm not a regular like C/B etc but i'd rather fish the occasional trip from a boat than struggle with the bank conditions at the moment.
I have had 2 out of 2 good trips, no doubt i will eat my words on Saturday if I fish the Fulling Mill!!

Very interesting to read the problems of lack of fish for bank anglers as I have had a similar experience at Llandegfedd where nobody caught at the shallower North end but the boats and those fishing the steeper banks over deeper water caught at depth. This water also has many big pike and loads of cormorants and I'm sure this plus maybe the clear and cold water temperature discouraged the fish from venturing into sgallower water.

Went to chew yesterday with two mates, we were bank fishing and we tried all the spots to no avail, we blanked.
Very hard fishing indeed from the bank. There were a lot of boats out and they seemed to be doing fine, especially down the dam end.

I thought today would be the day at ''Chew'' WRONG! Fishedv from 6.45 this morning without a touch. One bank angler took a fish very early on. His picture is in the lodge.''Where have all the fish gone? .It may help if some of the returns boxes were emptied, two boxes i came across today had comleted return cards in them from the 4th of May through to 8th of May. Will try Clatworthy on next trip as confidence is fast waining on these local waters.
