Hi, I am rather puzzled by Jonathan's up-beat report for the upper N.Tyne around Bellingham and Redeswood. From here, just downriver on the Wark Angling Club Water, I have nothing to report at all except frustration expressed by all members??? Despite the water having been at a good level for a while now it appears to us that there has been no significant fresh run of fish, few have been seen and next to none have been caught; literally one or two sea trout and no reports of 'touches' nor little else to encourage us. I have been out regularly at 5.00am, lunch time and early evenings now for several weeks without so much as a sniff of a fish, the last one I had was around three weeks ago, not even a touch since then If they are appearing at Bellingham then they are running straight through our club waters at Wark and ignoring all of our offerings in favour of upper N.Tyne. I am not disbelieving the reports for Bellingham... I'm just surprised and don't understand how it can be so different with so few miles between our beats...any ideas? Smoker

An update taken from local press report. By David Carrick, The Evening Chronicle The River Tyne produced salmon and sea-trout sport both before the floods and after, but it was patchy on many beats with fish dour and some turned off by the heavy peat stain present in the flow for several days.
Fish have been seen moving upstream at a variety of places. The good runs should set up the autumn fishing on the river with many more fish set to come in from the sea in September and October.
The Bywell beat saw George Nicholson landing a fish of 8lb at Upper Church on fly, while Ian Shuttleworth of Stanhope took a 13lb salmon at Beeches.
Kevin thingy of Bill Quay caught salmon of 13lb, 6lb and 3lb on fly. John Little of Kirk Merrington grassed a 13lb salmon on fly, while Keith Calder netted an 8lb sea-trout.
Chris Raymos took a fine 10lb fish at Beeches and George Nicholson landed a 17lb salmon at Pipeline.
The Tyne peaked at 4.4 metres and was bursting its banks in some areas. An estimated 8,000 salmon and sea-trout went through Riding Mill counter in July.
Last week's high waters brought some excellent sport to the Redeswood Beat on the North Tyne. Stephen Brown of Bellingham caught two salmon, while Mr Wright landed a sea-trout and Tony Wright took one salmon.
Jonathon Cocker of Riverdale brought in a 7lb grilse and three sea-trout on Ally's Shrimp patterns. David Turner of Bellingham landed a salmon of 11lb as well as two sea-trout on Red and Black Flying Condoms. Mark Clark snared a 4lb sea-trout off Newton and Chris Todd took a 16lb salmon off Tarset.
Also out on the North Tyne, Bob Smith of Morpeth landed a sea-trout of 4lb and also took a clean 11lb 4oz salmon while fishing the River Coquet.
Out on the Rede, Stephen Thompson of Ridsdale landed a 16lb fish on a spinner.

24-08-04 An update taken from www.tynefishing.comI have heard that 8000 fish come through the fish pass in July at Riding mill, if this is true then it is more than double any other year. Yet again conditions were near perfect above the rede over the weekend and my website competition winner Douglas Beveridge and i ventured down to Redeswood. It turned out to be a good prize for Douglas who landed a 10lb salmon to a cascade and 1 small sea trout to an Irish shrimp pattern. I too had a good day with a 12lb salmon and a 3.5lb sea trout both to Irish shrimp patterns. Several other fish were landed on hotel beats with Newton producing 3 sea trout and a grilse, Snabdough a 4lb sea trout, the hotel water had two 2.5lb sea trout to a ten year old resident. Only Tarset blanked but fish were lost there too. Sunday the dam dropped the water to a 1.5cmps release but on Monday it was increased to 15.5 and i maneaged to land another sea trout 0f 2.5lb at Redeswood. I was planning on telling you a tale of the one that got away in this weeks report but i do not need to as it is described very well by the very chap who was the unlucky recipient, so here is Ian Allcrofts email, sorry Ian. Johnny, Thanks for a great couple of days at short notice. I had good sport with three sea-trout and a grilse from Newton on Sunday (2 sea-trout from the Mill Pool first thing, and the grilse (3.5lb) and slightly larger sea-trout of 3lb from the Pit Pool after the dam water arrived). Sunday was special. Losing my lifetime best salmon at the net from the lower end of the Redeswood beat was both exhilarating and gutting. I now know I should have taken you up on the offer of a wire tailer. I certainly shall next time. The trout net Dave (Rose and Crown) kindly lent to me was absolutely useless - the fish being at least three times the length of the net's widest point!. This was certainly the biggest fish I've made contact with, and it was well beaten (on it's back and at the bankside) when the fly came lose after the 40 minute fight! The tail was a good 10-12" deep, and I couldn't get my hand around the wrist to tail it with my small hands. It was pretty fresh run too, and at well over a yard long I would guess at a weight of a good 22-25lb - possibly more. All fish were taken on smallish shrimp patterns to double and treble hooks - the best takers were the patterns with extended tails making the overall fly length circa 2". I tried stoats-tails in expectation of sea-trout in Newton and the fast run at the head of Redeswood but simply had no offers. The Ally's and Irish shrimp patterns ruled the day. You were spot on with the dam water 15 cm/s freshening things up, too. The fishing has been very good the last couple of weeks but one thing i must just mention, i have hardly seen a fish show. I know it is encouraging to see salmon bouncing all over the river but they are not but believe me they are there.....! The rumour mill is well and truly turning over this week and i have heard of a 37lb, yes 37lb salmon being caught on the South Tyne in the Haltwhistle area. Another story going around is of a 30lb salmon being landed in the Ingram pool at West Woodbourn on the Rede. I do not know how much truth there is in both these stories but if i find out then so will you......

The South Tyne 26-08-04 An update of catches from local press report. By David Carrick, The Evening Chronicle The rains came and gave River Tyne anglers some of the finest sport on record at Bywell. One angler who will never forget his halcyon day on the Tyne is Bill Quay's Kevin thingy. He caught nine salmon plus a sea-trout - and lost another seven salmon. Kevin fished a Red Ally's Shrimp with a Gold or Copper body and all of his fish were taken on a floating line. He landed two fish of 15lb and one of 18lb. Another angler to sample a great day was Mike Newcomb of Whitley Bay. On his first ever Tyne outing, he caught salmon of 22lb, 20lb and 14lb, while his fishing partner Paul Ryder took fish of 12lb and 18lb on a Black Dart and then another of 14lb on a spinner. Bywell now totals 270 fish for the season, including 200 salmon. Among the other excellent Bywell catches was a 17lb fish for George Nicholson of Wallsend, Norman Pattinson of Bywell took a 20lber on a Toby and Keith Calder of Barnard Castle bagged an 18lb salmon, also on fly. Elsewhere, Tom Todd from Pegswood caught a 17lb salmon from the NERAC waters on the South Tyne, while Steve Hutchinson of Callerton Village landed a salmon of 16lb and a sea-trout of 9lb, both from the South Tyne. Out on Tyneside Anglers Syndicate Waters, Terry Watson of Shotley Bridge netted a 10lb salmon off the South Tyne, while Mr Reed caught a 10lb fresh-run salmon on the Rede. The Environment Agency and Tyne Anglers Alliance Tyne Coarse Open was won with a huge 62lb 10oz net of dace caught in the Hexham area. In heavy waters this was a great catch. A couple of weeks ago I reported a very narrow escape in the South Tyne for Mike Lishman of Morpeth, who lost his tackle bag. After a 14-foot spate through the Tyne system, his bag was found by Northumbrian Riverside Police 10 days later. They hooked it out of the water and all of Mike's equipment was still inside. This is astonishing bearing in mind the huge waters the Tyne held at the time and the fact that it was washed down river from Fourstones on the South Tyne.

27-08-04 Another update taken from www.tynefishing.comNewsflash : Robert Keeney the hotel gillie has just been on the phone in a very excited mood, Hotel residents have landed eleven salmon at Chester's in the last two days. Robert says there are thousands of fish running and he has never witnessed this many in August, he says they are running around his feet and one even hit him in the chest. He rang Aidan Pollard (Bywell) further downstream who said there are thousands running down there too>! -------------------------------------------------------------------- If I remember correctly Lugg from this forum was due to fish Chesters in late August, possibly this week ! Look forwards to hearing what he has to say when he returns.

30-08-04 An update taken from www.tynefishing.comAlthough hotel residents did manage to clean up at Chester's last week there does seem to have been a bit of a lull the last couple of days with catches. There are plenty of fish in the river but they have gone off the take for the moment, however there may be some more rain on the way this week to freshen things up. Kielder is releasing 15cmps until Wednesday, after this we are left to guess how much water they will release. If they drop the water to a 1.5 then leave your rods in the bag until just before dark, but hopefully they will leave the river with a reasonable flow. I have updated the remaining rods section of the website and although hotel beats are filling up there is the odd gap here and there, especially in September. As it is the beginning of the Autumn period and we should see increased catches from here on in i will be updating this reports section at least twice a week from now until the end of the season. There will be the usual news flashes if the river conditions change drastically or something really special is caught. I have not had any confirmation on the two big fish i mentioned on last weeks report but i am still digging. Confirmation of over 8000 fish coming through the fish pass at Riding Mill has been put onto the E.A. website which you can view by hitting the link at the bottom of this page. I will leave you with a couple of extracts from emails i have received this week from catches at Chester's, please keep sending me information on catches and photos... Sat 28th 1 salmon 14 lbs - red cock fish - returned(not entered in either record for the week landed 3(19 ,12 and 14 lbs) - all red and returned broken twice and lost 4 others broke 2 rods - my 13 ft fly rod when I struck into a fish - I held the 2 pieces of rod together and played it for 5 mins when it broke me - im sure it was over 20 lbs. My 12 ft spinner when I slipped on wet grass. Ive got digital pictures of 3 fish (2 mine and 1of John Rose) if you are interested in using them either for your report or for the hotels' web site - drop me an e and Ill send them for inspection cheers Ali G. Dear Johnny 11 fish for the four days, largest fish 191/2 lbs on the fly (Verminator) ask Robert for the tying.5on the fly six spinning, fish constantly running in high water 2 foot-1ft10.Simon Ashworth my colleague took the big fish on middle island. The general feeling here is frustration/depression!
The current release of 15 cmps is great in that it is quite obviously bringing up loads of fish, however, catching them is another matter!
Despite reports of catches elsewhere in the N.Tyne system here at Wark, just 5 miles or so South of Bellingham, the situation remains desperate with no catches at all by anyone in weeks!
I personally have been out at least twice a day for several weeks, early morning and evening. I have seen loads of fish and have described our 'Blindburn Pool 'as hopping with fish. Despite this no-one in the club has even managed a meagre 'knock'.
Almost every day now for some weeks I have fished for hours, I have sent my flies past the noses of fish I have seen turning and jumping without result. I have tried every pattern in my box and every size, without result; and this is the consensus with other members, spinning or fly.
This frustration is compounded by the obvious large numbers of fish around, they are highly visible, jumping and turning around our heels.
Despite this I still enjoy the chase and remain bewildered but excited by the prospect of fish!

Wylam Bridge Pool Ray Welcome to the frustrations of salmon angling ! The majority of the pools on the river now have a decent head of fish 'potted' up in them. This evening I was watching a very coloured fish showing in the tail end of Wylam bridge pool. This fish looked like it had been in the river for months and had never ventured past the first none tidal pool on the river. During this time it must have seen every possible type of fly and spinner on the market. Once the fish have become 'potted' up like this in the pools they tend to become just about un-catchable ignoring just about everything which wizzes past above there heads and continuing to splash around merrily much to the anglers frustration. Your best bet maybe to leave these fish to splash around in the pools and consentrate on areas which any fresher running fish may temporarily hold up in.

A copy of a PM received from Lugg with regards to his visit to Chesters on the North Tyne :
Hi Dave, unfortunatelythe week is now over - I had a good and a bad week:- the good - the water was at a superb height compared to last year and there were plenty fish running hard I had 3 salmon 2 on black and silver flying c's and 1 on an Ally's shrimp( all self made) Weights were 19,12 and 14 lbs - all red and all returned on saturday in bright conditions I decided to make up a special "mepps" size 4 french blade( nickel) , 2 x 1/2 oz stainless steel bodiy shapes a size4 eagle claw nickel hook + a fire eye . I tried it out in the afternoon while fishing the mill race just below the weir at Chollerford. I hooked 2 salmon /1st in the low 10's came off after about 1 min; the 2nd was well over 20 lbs and ran over 200yds down stream at amazing speed before jumping and throwing the hook the bad - I lost 6 salmon(broken twice ) and broke 2 rods . I was fishing Chesters - tail of the Boat Pool stream using my 13 ft B&W Cordon Blue fly rod and I had a take - I struck into the fish as it turned and ran ; my butt section snapped just above the handle , so I held both sections together and played the fish for 5 mins before it then broke my 15 lb leader as well( strangely Ive never caught a salmon on this 13 ft rod, only on my 9 , 10 and 11 ft fly rods) then I broke my 12 ft Daiwa spinner when I slipped and fell on wet grass. Overall it wasa super week - good hotel, good company , good scenery and birds / animals The only slight blot was a friend is getting married in September and I wanted a clean fish for their reception - c'est la vie Next year " I'll be back"

Hey Smoker don't worry it happens to all salmon anglers at some point. Try an Irish shrimp pattern with orange/brown hackles and a gold body, about a size 12 treble. Cast almost straight accross with a floating line and put an upstream mend in the line. The fly will drop right in the holes but will not start wotking until it is about 45 degrees downstream. Be prepared for a soft take as the fly is dropping or starts to move with the line. Let me know how you get on.
Good luck

My previous gloom has now been replaced by a warm glow.... yesterday I landed a 10lb Sea trout on a flie that I tied myself, and today I thought I would pop out for a quick lunch time 'fling' and landed a beautiful Salmon of 16.1/4lb, both in the Blindburn pool of Wark Angling Club Waters, on the same flie, size 10 Cascade.
Wonderful.
Cheers.

An update taken from local press report.
By David Carrick, The Evening Chronicle Fish galore is the message from the Tyne and Wear rivers.
Both waters are receiving good runs of fish, with salmon, grilse and sea-trout around in good numbers.
Catches have been coming in thick and fast. Bywell Syndicate's stretches have fished well again with fabulous catches - none better than Jonathan Lee, who caught 10 salmon in a day, all on fly and on floating lines too.
Lee caught fish up to 17lb 8oz and seven of them came from Island while the other three were caught at Upper Church.
Tony Wood of Stanhope had a fish of 20lb and one of 8lb.
Anthony Hinton, Clifton, had fish of 17lb and 7lb on Ally's Shrimp patterns. George Nicholson of Wallsend caught salmon of 15lb, 8lb, 6lb and 9lb, while Irwin Wood of Cambo took fish of 6lb and 8lb on fly.
Chris Hartley of Guide Tackle caught a 21lb salmon on spinner at Lower Church, while Chris Raymos of Harrogate had an 8lb sea-trout and a 7lb grilse. Gerald Barker caught three grilse weighing 4lb 8oz, 4lb 8oz and 5lb, while Martin Farrer of Corbridge landed a 9lb salmon at Bywell on fly.
At Farnley, Roger Raynor landed a salmon of 21lb on fly and anther of 24lb on a Flying C. On the same beat, Stuart Rose had two sea-liced grisle and a salmon of 12lb which he returned. Ken Harrison of Stocksfield caught a 10lb salmon and a 4lb sea-trout.
Colin Brown from Throckley landed a 5lb 4oz sea-trout on the Federation waters on the Coquet on a number four Mepps.
Sport has been good on the North Tyne. Johnny Cocker of the Riverdale Hall hotel landed salmon of 10lb and 14lb, plus two sea-trout of 3lb, on Irish Shrimp patterns. Ian Allcroft had two sea-trout off Newton. Eleven salmon were taken at Chesters by Alan Fidling and John Rose, the largest 19lb 8oz
