19-07-04 It looks like im going to be working away from the area until after the end of the Tyne salmon season. Is there anyone interested in this thread being kept up to date ? Also is there anyone willing to keep the thread upto date, as i'm unsure what level of internet access I will have. Hi Dave, I would be happy to do it if you like. I was just about to put up a posting when I saw your mail, above. My subject was going to be 'Where are all of the fish' ? I don't know what's happening on the South Tyne or the main river but here on the North Tyne things are pretty desperate. We are just coming to the end of the second recent release from Kileder and we all thought that we would be seeing some sport as a result, but nothing! No-one up here on the Wark A.C. Waters have caught anything nor have we heard of reports of significant catches elsewhere in the N. Tyne system? We are all pretty frustrated and bemused, we haven't even seen fish. Having said all of this I lost a big fish this morning, see my posting to the general forum under 'Salmon Leader Strength' for info' if you are interested. Can anyone comment upon the situation in the main River and S.Tyne? I've heard lots of reports of fish coming in at the estuary and fish being seen going over the weir at Hexham, but if they are then they are going up the S.Tyne.......? Cheers. Smoker

An update of reported catches taken from local press report :
By David Carrick, The Evening Chronicle Fish have been running the Tyne in recent weeks after the extra water and Kielder releases are now having a good effect encouraging fish to run.
Approximately 4,000 fish swam through the fish pass at Riding Mill in June and up to Monday this week 2,800 had moved upriver in July.
What an introduction to the Tyne for Stuart McLanaghan from Gamblesby, Cumbria who landed a superb 25lb sea-liced fish while receiving tuition at Bywell.
Bywell Syndicate has now bagged 191 fish this season to date. Among the fish caught was an 12lb 8oz sea-liced salmon landed by Tom Cowing of Rowlands Gill on fly at Fish Pass. Colin Bell of Weardale and Gary Robinson of Spennymoor had fish of 13lb and 15lb.
Ian Shuttleworth has taken his season total of salmon to 19 after catching a 9lb 8oz fish in low water on fly. John Carmichael of Beverley had a 12lb 8oz salmon off the Gravel Runs above the island. Jonathan Lee of Darlington had a 9lb salmon on fly. John Richardson of Spennymoor took a 12lb 8oz salmon at Lower Church and Richard Armstrong of Wolsingham had a sea-liced 4lb grilse. I also heard of a cracking sea-trout of 14lb 8oz caught by Hexham angler Ian Blyth.
The top fly on the Tyne at present is the Red Ally's Shrimp with either a copper body or a gold body. Size 12 doubles in various shrimpy patterns have done well too.
Haltwhistle angler Peter Jensen had a great introduction to the Farnley Syndicate catching a 17lb salmon, 13lb sea-trout, 11lb salmon, 4lb grilse and a 3lb sea-trout on his first day on the water. All of his fish were returned and they were all fresh-run fish.
Paul Simpson of Lancaster landed 15lb and 18lb salmon using Yellow tube flies on NERAC Tyne waters. His brother Dave landed one of 15lb, while Paul Goldsmith from Bolton had fish of 16lb and 20lb and Wigan angler Darren Hankin took one of 13lb. Steven Hutchinson of Callerton Village caught a 9lb sea-trout off the Lower South Tyne on a Silver Stoats Tail and a 7lb sea-trout from TAS waters at Stanley Burn on a No.1 Mepps.
Alan Findley caught a 10lb salmon at Chesters while Andrew Dennis, fishing Redeswood out of the Riverdale Hall, caught a 12lb salmon an a Blue and Silver Toby.

02-08-04 A catch update and picture taken from www.tynefishing.com river report. Dr Stuart McLanaghan from Penrith with his huge salmon taken at Bywell Backing up my report that there are fish through all the beats in good numbers were Gordon Parkin, Paul Lancaster & Andy Blundell who ventured up to Bellingham during low water last week. On their first day Andy landed two salmon on the lower beat at Chester's a 15lb salmon to a yellow flying C which was returned. Also a 12lb sea louced salmon on a very small fly which was kept. Both fish were from the boat pool. Paul Lancaster took a four pound sea trout from the upper beat, but gordon not to be out done took a 15lb salmon to a flying C the next day out of the Charlton pool at Newton. I popped up to Bellingham on Friday night and landed at Tarset at 6.45pm, there was a 10.5cmps release on, i lost a salmon on my fourth cast and just before dark about 9.30pm i took a clean sea trout of 3lb to a small orange ally's. The next morning at 5am i was back on the river with my friend David Turner from the Rose and Crown, this time at Redeswood. David lost four fish on a red flying C and i had one pull to the fly and at 9.30 we went back to Riverdale for breakfast. David was unable to return due to having to open the pub but i wandered back to Redeswood but this time at the top island pool. I again almost straight away lost a salmon which was frustrating but when you have fished 10.5cmps releases as long as i have you realise that the fish short take all the time. I changed to a size 14 treble, orange, Irish shrimp pattern and within minutes i was into a fish. The salmon ran me up and down the river with power i have never witnessed before and after 45 minutes of relentless fighting i decided to get out my mobile and call for help. I just could not get the fish near the net, David turned up on 50 minutes by which time i was flagging with my 13 foot rod bent in double and my wrist hurting like hell. The fish still had plenty of power left and even tried to run between my legs!. I eventually landed the fish with a helping hand and collapsed on the bank. The fish had obviously gone for the fly but hooked itself in the eye and although we did try to return it, the fish was spent and it's eye severely damaged. Although only 15lb this fish fought harder than any other i have experienced but i suppose you will only ever know if you hook one in the eye. I do feel bad about taking such a wonderful fighter but it simply could not be helped. The only other fish caught on our beats was a 4lb sea trout landed by a novice whilst getting casting lessons on Snabdough, i think it is fair to say he will be back. It just goes to prove that all beats are fishing well at the moment and with another 10.5cmps from 1.30pm on monday until 1.30pm on Thursday, if you can get up north then do!.

The table below shows the monthly combined upstream counts for salmon and sea trout at the Environment Agency fish counter at Riding Mill on the main River Tyne. The counter began operation in Jun 1996 (hence the lack of data for the earlier part of that year).

10/08/04 An update taken from www.tynefishing.com river report. Rain and lots of it caused dangerous conditions on the South Tyne today as a wall of water came down the river The South Tyne can be a very dangerous place to be when prolonged down pours occur and one gentleman was lucky today to escape as he lost his tackle bag and £500 worth of tackle. Meanwhile the North Tyne remains at a fairly low level and will probably fish well even after the 10.5cmps release tomorrow at 7.30pm. The releases is set to continue until Friday evening at the same time and once again anyone who can make the trip up North should be thinking about dropping everything. I have had reports of very large runs coming up through Hexham and clean fish to boot!. The Hotel residents who ventured up last weekend were unlucky as they caught the water low and the sun was beating down making conditions far from ideal. I am afraid unless you live on the water then it is the risk you take. Here is a copy of an email i received this week from a hotel angler who did not catch but appreciates what salmon fishing is all about. Just a note to say thanks for all your help with the fishing on the Tyne. I didn't manage to connect with a fish but the two stretches of river you picked for me were some lovely water with stunning scenery. Speaking to the other rod on Chesters who fishes it regularly, It would seem that the water dropped on Thursday after the Kielder release stopped and this made the difference. We saw plenty of fish showing on Saturday morning(salmon and sea trout), a fresh looking fish of about 12-15lb nearly jumped in my waders in the top of the boat pool and the water had leveled off and was still fishable, if a little slow in places for the fly. But despite a nice cloudy morning the fish where not playing ball. Newton was perfect fly water but being low the fishable water was a little less than normal, I still managed a pull or two on small red shrimp flies but the fish were not fully committed in the heat. I can imagine its fantastic at its best. I had a great time and I will definitely be back to you to come up again, i will keep an eye on your website for dates and reports, and the weather of course. It's pouring down here now, typical, and with the amount of fish in the river i would say your in for a great finish to the season. I do appreciate comments whether good or bad and feedback is what helps myself and Riverdale Hall offer the best holiday we can. Today's Flyfisher (September issue) has a fantastic article about fishing at Chester's and Riverdale Hall. Agent X arrives at his fishing destinations without letting anyone know he writes for the magazine and in this case he and his friend were not disappointed. Wait until they come back in the Autumn!.....

An update of reported catches taken from local press report :
By David Carrick, The Evening Chronicle The heavy persistent rainfall of late has improved conditions on local rivers yet again but it also reminds anglers of the dangers on river systems these days.
The South Tyne came away as a raging torrent on Monday and one angler lucky to get out of the water in time was Mike Lishman, of Morpeth, who was fishing NERAC waters.
A huge wall of water came roaring round the bend and trees and other debris was being washed out like firewood.
Mike's Scierra fishing bag was washed away, along with over £500 worth of reels etc.
This incident highlights the dangers of fast rising waters due to massive volumes of rainfall causing flash floods.
Anglers must be aware of these dangers when out on rivers in inclement weather.
Any angler who finds Mike Lishman's bag after the floods can contact the Sports Desk on (0191) 201 6464.
Before the spate came into the Tyne on Monday evening, anglers were getting some good sport on the North Tyne.
Paul Lancaster fished Upper Chesters and caught a 4lb sea-trout, while Gordon Parkin fished the CharIton Pool on the Newton beat and caught a salmon of 15lb.
Andrew Brindell caught salmon of 15 and 12lb at Chesters on the Lower beat, while Jonathan Cocker, of the Riverdale Hall Hotel, had a 3lb sea-trout at Tarset and a 15lb salmon at Redeswood on fly.
Tony Wright took a 9lb salmon and a 2lb sea-trout off Redeswood, while David Turner of Bellingham had an 8lb salmon and a llb 8oz sea-trout off the Ferryhill AC waters.
Colin Storey, of Fenham, has had some good sport on Tyneside Anglers Syndicate Waters this week, taking sea-trout of 2lb 12oz, 3lb 8oz, 6lb 8oz and 8lb, all on Silver Stoats Tail flies.
Nick Chilton, of Durham, had a good spell on the Wear TAS waters, taking sea-trout of 3 and 4lb and a grilse of 5lb.

I drove past the lower South Tyne tonight and that was also bank high and very coloured.
Think we could be in for some good fishing when it eventually drops.

15-08-04 An update taken from www.tynefishing.com river report. When i looked at the river on Friday evening below the hotel i new that by Saturday morning conditions would be perfect for all beats above the Rede and below Tarset burn. That meant that Redeswood, Snabdough, Newton and Tarset would all fish perfectly. Unfortunately no-one was fishing Snabdough and only one on each of Newton and Tarset and Redeswood was left as a local day!. Those of you who read my reports on a regular basis probably know what i about to say next. Yes you guessed it, another bumper day at Redeswood and although i have not received the full count as yet, when i left at 4pm yesterday the beat had already produced 12 fish. Myself and Rose and Crown owner David Turner were on the beat at 4.30am and before breakfast at 9am David had landed a clean 11lb salmon and two sea trout both of about 3lb. The river was still a little on the high side as an increased flow from Kielder on Friday night to 15cmps had pushed the level up, therefore i was forced to spin for the first time in over a year. David's fish here all hooked on a black and red flying C and i took a very clean salmon of 7lb to a blue and silver toby. The rain water in the river was dropping quickly and after breakfast i took out the fly rod and ventured in to the Bridgford pool at the top of the beat. The first time i went through the pool i was getting contact nearly every cast and landed two sea trout of 4lb & 5lb both to small Irish shrimp patterns which i got from Robert the gillie. The river was still high and i would not have advised anyone who did not know the beat to have waded and i found myself on one tip toe, hands waving a couple of times. The sun came out about mid day and things slowed up, however i did land another sea trout to the same fly on the bottom run before the Rede of 3lb. Other catches reported so far from Redeswood are, Steven Brown 2 salmon, Howard Wright 1 sea trout, Tony Wright 1 salmon. I am sure there will be more to report as Kevin Lee was going down for the evening shift and he is usually the redeswood destroyer!. Mark Parks fishing Newton for the first time returned a 4lb sea trout and meanwhile hotel regular Chris Cobb spent a large amount of the day recovering from a tumble downstream. When he did get a short chance to fish he was at Tarset where he took his largest ever salmon of 16lb, well done Chris and well done for having the sense to purchase a life jacket. The 15.5cmps release is the best possible height of water for all the hotels northern beats and is due to continue until at least Wednesday. There is no-one booked on to Redeswood, Newton or Tarset for Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday!!. We saw many fish running throughout the day and i think, weather provided we may be in for rather a good August. I have as yet not received any reports from further downstream, however i doubt that many of the beats would have fished at all below the Rede. We are fortunate that we always get a couple of days great fishing after a flood before other lower beats can even cast a line. Just a quick note to say that the Rede was in perfect shape by the time i left yesterday and should fish well Sunday and Monday.

Richard thanks for the charts.
I had a couple of hours on the lower river at Merryshields last night and there seemed to be a good head of fish in the stretch, for the first time this season, judging by the amount showing. The level was still a little on the high side but it should fish very well over the next couple days or so.

Hello All
although there do not seem to be many fish showing in the North Tyne beats around Bellingham there are fish being caught every day. David from the rose pub had another sea trout yesterday and another resident landed a nice sea trout too. I had a phone call from a friend today who says that there are a lot of fish coming over at Hexham. I landed fish in the top pool at redeswood last week without seeing a fish show. Spring and summer fish can be there in their masses and you may never know until you hook one and i know it is encouraging to see them but not a necesity. I am out on the river again this Saturday and as long as the river is in decent condition i should catch again. I read this thread all the time but i have two jobs at the moment and find it hard to post. i just thought i would let you know for what it is worth that i enjoy your coments. It is a shame more people do not know about this thread, when i started my site i hardly got any interest but now i get 20-40 thousand individual hits a year. I will try to remember to mention this thread on my site in the hope that it will help benefit locals and visitors to the Tyne area. I take most of my fish to small Irish shrimp patterns or ally's, infact i rarely fish with anything else. I used to use a variation of a munro with a bit of extra red added but that seems to have gone off the boil at the moment. Many locals in Bellinghan catch on flying C's, Red, black and white seem to be the popular colours. Keep up the good work. Yours in sport Jonathan

Jonathan Good to see you posting on here again. Keep up the excellent work on www.tynefishing.com and congrats on the excellent article in Today's Flyfisher. It made a nice change having a Tyne salmon fishing article in one of the big magazines. I have heard reports that there were a lot of salmon and sea trout showing in the Haltwhistle area on the South Tyne last weekend but there were very few anglers out.
