Not my personal cup of tea Dave but are you allowed to use spinning rods? If so, was anyone doing so?
Hope you get clearer/lower water soon.
Tightlines.

The following is an extract of the Riverdale Hotel river report and gives details of some salmon caught to date on the Tyne :
Congratulations go out to Ian Shuttleworth of Stanhope who is the first ever winner of the Northern Game Angler Magazine trophy for the first salmon caught on the Tyne in 2004. Ian caught a 15lb 8oz salmon on a black and yellow streamer fly on Bywell syndicate water, the fish was weighed in the net before being carefully returned. Just half an hour later at 11.30am David Carrick landed a 9lb salmon at Merryshields on a yellow and gold flying c. Also on Saturday Kevin Parker of spennymoor landed an 11lb salmon also at Bywel, on a blue and silver toby. On monday Mr Armstrong also fishing at Bywell landed a 14lb salmon on a green highlander fly. There have been rumours that an earlier fish was landed at waters meet on a flying c in the big floods but no one has come foreward to try and claim the trophy.
I managed to get through to the Environment Agency this morning to discuss why the gates at Riding Mill fish pass had been closed and what effect this will have on spring fish running the Tyne. I spoke to John Shelley who explained that the gates have been closed since December and are due to open again next week. There have been two temporary passes in place to assure safe passage for spring fish. Work has been taking place to update monitoring to enable the E.A. to more accurately see what effects the building of the new Tyne tunnel will have on running salmon.
The remaining rods section of the website has been updated so you may now see what is still available on Redeswood, Newton, Snabdough & Chesters for 2004.

22-02-04 Unable to fish today due to family commitments but did manage a quick look at the river which is now in excellent condition. I would expect more fish to be reported caught this weekend provided there are sufficient rods out as many beats are very lightly fished until after June 16th. Tight lines everyone.

Hello Dave hope you are well and thank you for posting my reports. For those of you who are interested in Tyne reports such as the one underneath which are published on Wednesdays. You may visit my site at www.tynefishing.comSeveral more reports of salmon being caught and lost in the last week and a confirmation from a good source that a salmon was landed at the waters meet a couple of weeks ago. Clean fish have also been lost at Corbridge i am being told so it should not be too long before a North Tyne salmon is hooked. Ian Shuttleworth was presented with his award for first witnessed salmon of the season at the weekend and i am hoping to have a picture forewarded to me of his catch for next weeks report. I suppose you could say that Ian slammed home his superiority with his second catch of the season, a 7lb salmon in the island pool at Bywell. Other catches at Bywell include a 20lb+ salmon caught on a streamer fly by Reg Arkle. Not to be out done by his brother, Ray Arkle landed the first sea trout of the season in the beeches pool on a gary dog his fish weighed in at 5lb. John Little of Kirkmerrington landed a 10lb salmon also to a streamer fly at Broomhaugh followed by another presumably to the same fly in the pipeline pool. Andrew McKelvey from South Shields also had a 10 pounder again at Broomhaugh but to a spinner and Simon Brough had a lovely 16lb salmon from the Bridge pool at Wylam to a fly. Graham Heaney who is on the water every day at Wylam has reported seeing very few fish so far this year however with the reported catches one can only assume that the fish must be running at night, there have been springers spotted running in off the tide at dusk, at Styford. If you are wondering what a the streamer fly is like which seems to be the fly catching so far this spring i can tell you. It is a tube about 2" with wings and colours similar to a green highlander or a yellow belly, devon minow imitation if you like with a green metalic body and gold or silver ribs. Competition 2004 This years competition is very simple to enter, all you have to do is send in your favourite photo of a salmon or sea trout catch from anywhere in the world. At the end of April the winner will be picked and the winners name announced. The prize is a days guided fishing in August, for two on Redeswood fishing for sea trout or salmon if conditions suit. So start sending in your photos and i will post some up on this report every week.

Believe it or not i have actually been on the North Tyne already at Redeswood. I spent three long hours in freezing water without even seeing a fish never mind catching one. I can usually rely on some kelt action but no not this time. The earliest fresh fish i have heard of in the Bellingham area was mid March and the first fresh fish i hooked last year was March 14th on chester's. I did not land him though but had a few minutes of mahem as he went bonkers. A good and cheap spot to pick up an early fish further up stream is at Tyen Green in Hexham where the wood sticks out from the river from an old bridge. Anyway i could waffle all day but alas i have work to do. I would appreciate any information on catches from further downstream for my site Dave if you here of any. All the best and tight lines Flyboy

Jonathan,
I will let you know if I hear of any catches.
I have heard some good reports about the fishing at Tyne Green with the 'Stumps' as you mentioned and the 'Narrows' getting some good reports, although I have yet to fish there personally.

Managed a couple of hours on the river this morning. No fish to report, plus no other anglers fishing, must have been something to do with the nice covering of snow we have at the minute. River running just above normal summer level and very clear, although I would expect it to start rising now the snow is clearing. The following picture shows the river below Bywell bridge.

03-03-04 Once again thanks to Jonathan for the following report which is taken from www.tynefishing.com/ river report. The total declared catches have shot up to 20 salmon and two sea trout for 2004, considering that the first two weeks were a wash out and that the gates at the fish pass were closed until last Monday thats not bad. Although two alternative passes were put in place whilst the gates were closed i believe there must have been some hindrance to running fish. Usually there would have been springers taken at Corbridge or Hexham by now. I was reminded today that only about 10% of fish in the river are caught, on that reckoning there must be at least 200 salmon in the Tyne. Graham Heaney landed three salmon in the last 7 days, a 13 pounder to a yellow tube, one at 14lb to a black and gold flying C and a 11lb fish to a 2.5" silver devon. The last fish was covered in louse, so even though the river is low there must be running fish. All Graham's fish were taken at Wylam. At Bywell Ian Shuttleworth has been at it again with a whopping 29lb salmon on a size 8 cascade shrimp treble on a floating line, yes you heard correct a floating line. 7 year old Issac Walton from Wakefield had an experience that will probably live with him forever as a 10lb springer led him a merry dance. Hooked on a spinner in the bridge pool he finally landed the fish in the pipeline pool. Kevin thingy from Bill Quay had two fish to the fly, 9lb & 16lb respectively, both from the castle pool. Harry Curry also had a 16lb salmon with sea louse from the upper church pool on a number 8 Willy Gun. Reg Arkle whose brother had the first sea trout last week caught the second on a fly weighing in at 5lb. Richard Armstrong from Co Durham landed a 14lb fish to a fly at Broomhagh and lost two others. Douglas Beveridge a regular at Riverdale Hall watched Ian Shuttleworth catch as mentioned above so decided to put on a floating line and a 1 inch cascade. This proved to be a good move as he landed a cracking 17lb salmon.

12-03-04 The following report is taken from www.tynefishing.com/ The site also has an updated 'availibility' section for the backend on the Riverdale Hall Hotel controlled beats. "Lots of fresh springers are now being spotted coming into the Tyne system but with the river low we have still to here of a fish much above the tidal limit. Bywell syndicate have brought their seasons total to 24 salmon and 2 sea trout. This weeks catches include a 10lb salmon from Allan Auton of Teeside a 15lb salmon by Norman Pattinson of Bywell from the Beaches pool. Ian Henderson from Corbridge landed a 9 pounder at Broomhaugh John Little of Kirkmerrington a 15lb fish and Fed Downs from Riding Mill a 12lb fish both gents also getting their catches at Broomhaugh. At Upper Broomhaugh Fred King had a 10lb salmon meanwhile Charlie Coghill from Lemington got a cracking 20lb salmon to a silver toby at Haggs hole on the Northumbrian Federation water above Wylam. Mrs Anne Dunc had two salmon from the same lie and finally Graham Heaney brought his seasons total to 5 with 2 very fresh 12lb salmon."

17-03-04 The following report is taken from www.tynefishing.com/ Some heavy rain and a 10.5 dam release has encouraged the springers to start moving in bigger numbers and the first catches on both the North & South Tyne have been declared. The South Tyne rose 2 feet and the North about 6 inches on the release and as i was making a video of Chester's yesterday it was a wash out. At Bywell Norman Pattinson lost two fish but did managed to land three salmon of 12lb, 15lb & 24lb all on a black and gold toby and all in the beaches pool. Kevin thingy had a 12 pounder in the Island pool on a size 8 ally's and Kieth Graham from Wallsend also had a salmon to a blue and silver divro Devon. Meanwhile at Wylam Graham Heaney had two more salmon for the season one at 9lb and the other 12lb the first to a black and gold flying C and the second to a Wylam Spratt Repalla. David Eltringham had two salmon to a devon of 12lb and 17lb also at Wylam. On the Farnley Estate just below Corbridge Stuart Rose of Leeds had a 16lb salmon. Moving upstream to the lower South Tyne Peter Fitzpatrick recorded the North Eastern Railways first catch of the season, a very clean 8 pounder taken on a yellow and gold flying C. On the North Tyne in the Wall area there has been a salmon landed i am told from a good source and it is fair to say that the season is on.....

Dave: I enjoy your river reports enormously.
Good to see that 'Kevin Thingy' had himself a 12-pounder, too.

Paul,
I must confess that I can take no credit for the actual reports as they are produced by Jonathan Cocker for the Tynefishing.com website, which is well worth a visit by anyone considering having a visit to the Tyne.
All I am doing is producing a thread that will give an overview of the season week by week come the end of october.
