Well done for stiking it out chaps!
Funny there are only a few risers at Chew. At blagdon the fish are feeding heavily off the top, especialy in the evenings of a hot day.
Must get over to chew soon.....

First fishing trip of the season started today with an afternoon at Chew
The wind was very arkward - the lodge suggested I try Wick - which I did - full face into a gale. The boats were lovin it though and stacked up close to the shore, saw quite a few getting in to fish during the very brief time I was there, way too muddy for the bank though.
Moved on to Walley which was quieter wind wise but not even a sniff of a fish - had a chat with another angler who'd been there all day and caught nowt.
Saw a chap getting in to one from the bank off Woodford as I left the car park
Eventually ended up at Nunnery - finally got a pull (nearly had the rod off me) but it faded off the line as they do sometimes.
From what I could tell the fish are hard on the bottom and want it static - I tried the booby but got bored within about 5 mins so decided to accept the blank and went back to pulling.
The evening turned perfect but my reluctance to fish the way they wanted it resulted in the inevitable - but I enjoyed it.
Well at least I know a bit more about Chew now

Nice to see some bank anglers thrashing it out against the recent hurricanes hitting the shores of chew. Me and some friends believe there is a seperate microclimate around that place different to everyelse in the surrounding area! Anyway, apologies to the bank angler on Wick, i was one of the anglers in the boats. Sorry if we got to close. Most of us were in a small competition and we all got into fish, mostly on buzzers, diawl bachs and other imitations. Me though being a true purist, went for orange blobs but at least i fished a buzzer on the middle dropper. In total i think there were 100 fish between 24 of us. Looks like chew is finally switching on.

Pleased to see that a few fish are being caught now but I had a disasterous session this afternoon. Fished Wood Bay and Pegs (Blagdon) then Walley and finally Woodford at Chew. Seems that a few fish came from Woodford during the day and one lad had 5 apparently on an orange lure. Other anglers also had fish although one unfortunate person had his first pull of the day just as I arrived at around 7pm only to lose it! I fished an intermediate with just about every lure in my box without a pull until 8pm when an elongated flash of silver in the water and a sharp pull signalled the arrival of a 2.5lb jack pike. The Jack fought surprisingly well and leapt out of the water two or three times with its gills flaring ! The only other excitement was when I stood on my glasses in my wading boots and cracked a lens. Looks like there will be no more impulse tackle buys for me for a while. Allrounder ;D

You guys deserve medals....................or a spell in a mental institution. Charlie I think the 'mental institution' option is more appropriate at the moment Charlie. Trouble is that it will turn on sooner or later, and I want to be there when it does. Allrounder ;D

No appologies required from the boats on Wick - that was the sensible way to fish there given the conditions. I could just about punch out 20yds in to the teeth of the gale but even that wasn't enough to get the fly past the mud cloud - I'd guess the fish would be in the nice clear water which was tantilisingly out of reach. There was so much surf I kept looking back at my kit to see if the tide was coming in or going out ! "it will turn on sooner or later, and I want to be there when it does" me too !

I did the same last friday, imbeded them in to the mud, and snaped the frame Right so on saturday its Barrows, Chew or Blagdon, all are fishing OK if you get there at the right time. I think woodford wold be a good starting point if the wind is right.

Hi Troutboy I felt for you on Sunday, there were loads of fish around but they were (as usual) just further out than you could get casting into that cold wind! I think it was either that the deeper water was warmer or that the waves were kicking up mud which the fish do not like in their gills.
I think a boat was the only way to catch (however it wasnt that pleasant cause the boat was rocking bigtime).
From a boat point of view it seemed that the fish were deep, following attractors (orange or viva) then taking black buzzers just before the surface. I didnt seem to think they wanted it static as i was pulling quite fast, mind you, you have to pull quite fast in those conditions just to keep up with the speed of the boat!!
I saw you took a couple of trips back to your car to warm up, I was dead jealous!! I felt like seeing if you wanted to swap for a while, so that you could catch fish and I could warm up!
I hope the wind dies down soon for bank anglers to enjoy the sport, ive got a small boat on the Dorset coast and it seemed that every weekend last year was windy, is this something to do with nGlobal Warming!!
Tight lines for the rest of the year.

Hi Tackletart,
That must have been another hero/fool - delete as appropriate I was only there for a few casts - the wind was painful (as you know) so I had a couple of chucks, realised it was futile and headed off.
Yeah sorry when I was talking about deep and static I meant at nunnery
Still I'm sure the good weather is on its way and the bank will soon be on fire .... ever the optimist ;D

Hello Tackletart. i wonder if the bank anglers wanted to change places with you! They all looked mighty pissed off from where i was sat, which was next to you incidently!! Still, its better to have fished and blanked than to have never fished at all. Its always nice to get into those rainbows.Im planning to get back next week, hopefully monday or tuesday. regards timmy treenymph
