Will they be selling a full range of tackle, because isn't the tackle shop that's already there an Orvis retailer ?

Not sure how I feel about Orvis opening in Bakewell. I have no axe to grind with Orvis - have two of their rods and bought other bits of kit from their Bath outlet BUT....
I have always loved Peter Arfield's little shop. Friendly and expert advice given by someone who really cares about fly fishing. Decent independents are becoming a scarcity. I'd hate it if his business suffered as a consequence of the big "O" opening up nearby.

I share the concerns raised. I like orvis gear, have three of their rods and praised their after sales service on this forum. But it is a little surprising that their expansion plans involve coming into a town already served by a long standing retailer. I would be really interested to hear their rationale for this decision.

And I'm not trying to stir; wouldnt want the forum member concerned to think that I was stirring things against them, because I'm not. My concern is with the impact of a corporate outfit like Orvis opening in a small town like Bakewell which is already catered for by a well respected tackle shop.

I was in the Fly Fishing Shop today and discussed this thread with Peter Arfield. He does not have access to this site but was content for me to give an update.
He tells me that he has a working agreement with Orvis : whilst they will stock some tackle, they will refer people to him for expert advice, tutelage etc. They seem to be more geared up to clothing ( that is certainly the case in some of their other stores I have been to ) so this could be a win - win situation.
Lets hope so. Small independent retailers should be cherished and it would be really poor business practice if Orvis wanted to go up against one of their own dealers. It would do little for the good reputation they generally have.

I consider Pete a good friend having known him for many years. He recently took on the shop in his own right. Previouly it was a branch of the Fly Fishing Shop in Stockport. Pete rung me when he heard about the coming of Orvis, he was worried! I spoke with him last Monday and he was very upbeat about the relationship he has deveoped with the new shop. There are precious few shops offering the quallity of service that Pete offers.
One note about the shop. It may be closed for a few minutes when you call because he is giving someone an inpromptu lesson. Go have a cuppa he'll be back soon and when he gets round to you you will get the same level of service he just gave the last guy. Even if you only want a spool of tippet material he will gladly advise you what knots to use.
A real character and a true gentleman I for one hope his shop goes from strength to strength.
Cheers, Alan.

The Orvis clothing store in dover street is in direct competition with that Pall mall based retailer of fine country clothing . strange one would think central London would support a proper tackle shop ,

Pete was the guy that introduced me to the Double Badger - its difficult to put into words how significant an event this has proved to be ;D I remember phoning him up and asking him advice on a new line. "I have just the thing that will make your rod sing! 'Course if you look around you might get it cheaper than I sell it, but if you come in and see me I'll spin it on for nowt and put you right with some patterns for the local river" God, how right he was!!
