The there/their and coarse/course (or even corse) and similar mix ups can be annoying but what really annoys me are those intolerant people who criticise the spelling and grammar of other posters on a public fly fishing forum.
These boards are all about communication and it's seldom that you cannot understand what the poster is trying to communicate no matter how bad their written English may be. It must be a real downer for someone who, having bucked up the courage to post knowing that he or she is not clever with words, to have the spelling police start taking the piss.
Please remember that not everyone may have had the benefit of the same level of education as yourself, may be dyslexic or just not good at English but may well be bloody good anglers.
One of the characters in the radio programme 'The Goon Show', the Famous Eccles, had the catch phrase - " well, nobody's perfect ". The older I get the more I appreciate just how true that is - I know that I am not - how would you rate yourself.
Dave.

I had a boyfriend who wrote 'your cute' inside my Birthday card. It annoyed me so much I cruelly corrected him on it, needless to say we didn't last long. T.P. Bet that was a confidence boost for him... "IT'S YOU'RE CUTE, NOT YOUR CUTE, YOU DYSLEXIC SPASTIC". "Oh, sorry love".

I must admit to not only liking full words in text messages, but proper punctuation as well. Now as it is possible to pass at least GCSE if not 'A' level English by writing an essay in text speak - sad for the English language!
I had a very amusing email recently, which proved that disylexia is not really a problem. Quite simply, it showed that if the letters were all there and at least the first one correct we would understand what was written.
T.P. that really was cruel: he had probably spent years to be that emotionally honest and was probably affraid it would result in a shotgun marriage - no father required!
Now a final rhetorical question, does caring about the lsanguage indicate ones age?

As i am taking My GCSE's next year you can not actually possible to take your exams like that as you get marked on your grammer and punctuation. But people should use spell check before they post and that may correct it.
Thanks Josh

Bite your fingers if it annoys you that much, people don't come here for an English lesson, they come for information/exchange of ideas about a sport/hobby that they/we partake in.

Tend to agree with Silver Stoat. It would be nice if people were a tad more tolerant towards spelling mistakes and punctuation. No one can possibly know the circumstances that can cause a poster to spell or punctuate wrongly, so it always pays to tread softly.
Indeed, if we were all prevented from writing due to mis-spelling, we would never have heard from W.B Yeats !
To quote an ex-president of the US,
"It's a d**n poor mind that can only think of one way to spell a word"

A language is precious and very valuable. It encapsulates culture, history and identity as well as being a means of communication. It has its anomalies and irregularities but, on the whole, it has set rules which are there for very good reason - to assist in precise communication and to preserve the integrity of the language and those who use it.
Assisting politely with repeated spelling and grammatical errors on this Forum (often by PM) is justified and necessary. Doing what one can to promote the proper use of a language is more important than the fragile egos of these posters who you say will be traumatised by such advice. One can only hope that they have the maturity to learn from that advice, improve their communication skills and take it in the spirit that it was given.
Yes, we are here to talk about fishing but it would help all of us if we could do so as clearly and unequivocally as possible.
By the way Gnat, you have no idea how tolerant I regularly am!
As for that US President ....QED
