In certain ways the Loch is a lottery ,by that you get anglers that practice often and get a game plan going find fish and areas, times to be in those areas,on the day you get Mr Lucky in the boat never been out on Loch since June last year, what happens he catches you don't ,he makes the team your pig sick saying why o why did i bother, but he will do it again this year.Jimmy you have done it the same as me but we will try again and again your lucky mate you have age on your side, all that lashing di7 is telling on me mate ;D ;D ;D

Toshy Tell me about it i dont know how many times i've made the final and put in a few good hours practice in and there is a few others like me Davy Paterson ,Bill Barnes and Keith to name a few. As Michael says you must have to get to know the loch really well, but how well . Scottish boys can go to Grafham ,Rutland & Brenig and can put in a few days practice and get team and individual results. I know you can never get enough practice . I do not dislike loch leven far from it i am only trying to justify my comment that "Leven can be a lottery sometimes " i did not want to upset anyone over it, it was only my honest opinion ,wrongly or rightly !

i remember that day toshy, i was boating for davy mcalllister and had taken a day off work, i have over a dozen fish that day with gumps nothing as big as Big Rex belter but the fishing was superb that day Practice does not make perfect, how many times has allister mckellar got in with no practice at all. Its all about confidence and when you are practising and you and many others are getting nothing then at that time i do believe whats the point. thats why I went to the river earn on my second practise day and if I had landed that big fish I lost and got in the team it would have been and injustice, but I have got in the team many other times with hard work and practice, so what different now. The fish are still there I beleive and so do many of the Loch Leven Regulars, but its whether they want to play or not. Peter hooked 4 or 5 fish on the day and only landed one so they are there. Bring back some rainbows form the original lot and lets show the UK what real rainbows should look like My 2 bobs worth Dave PS when is opening day on the Loch?

To be honest, I don't even think it's about knowing the Loch. Even if you know every stone on the bottom, a couple of weeks away can throw you right off the mark and you can be made to look very silly. I do think that Loch Leven is one of those places where you need to get as much knowledge as possible about where the fish are at any one time, so I guess practice on the place makes all the difference.
I know I used to detest those hot July days practicing for the Bensons and stuff knowing that eight hours of slog might only bring one or two fish. However, we did make the finals on a number of occasions with the odd medal chucked in, so I guess it was worth it.
I have a theory that only handsomely challenged (ugly so and so's) make successful competition anglers. Maybe that's why I'm no good at it. Of course, I think Bill Barnes is the exception... and it's nothing to do with him being six-foot-three. Honest! ;D
