Hi everyone, Yes it was me you met up with on thursday Flybri and i seem to have given you the wrong impression. Yes i have caught fish on size 12 flies on the whitewater but only when , like i said the fish were really "having it". I normally fish with size 16/14 flies and i seem to catch fish like everyone else. In no way did i wish to appear as a know it all and i'm sorry if thats the way it came across. as you rightly say it's my second season on the whitewater and i can only relate my personal experience so far. To be fair i didn't fish the water this early on in the season last year so it may well be that the fish are picky early on. I receive all advice gladly from persons with more experience than i. I am not too proud to take good advice. The times last year i fished with max hook size were more of a case of having nothing else to fish with at the time .Indeed you certainly gave me food for thought when you said you couldn't get a small enough fly to interest them and i will be trying the smaller approach for myself. I think i was surprised that your approach differed to mine and made me question myself. Interestingly enough i fished the afternoon with what i had in my box (size 14 klinks) and fished through from the hatchgate bridge. I connected briefly with a fish at the confluence of the hart but didn't see any movement again until dead cert corner which was boiling. But it appears they were being fussy and i couldn't get any interest so i moved on. Finally at the deep pool with the drain pipe i caught a nice stockie which was very much into surface feeding. Lastly i finished the day with 3 fish for 3 casts under holdshott farm bridge, 2 chub and 1 trout of about a pound. cheers AL.

Hi Pond, no i drive a Red volvo estate! Flybri, simply a misunderstanding that's all, no apologies needed. Your postings and advice on this thread and the old 2005 thread have been invaluable to me ( along with the other regulars) it is i who should apologise for getting off on the wrong foot. Incidentally i am going to stock up on smaller flies i am sure that the more natural presentation these give will increase my catch rate. I haven't got anything smaller than 16 in my box at the minute, is anyone fishing 18/20 even 22's. Cheers Al.

Jon, Will be having a session one night this week (not tue/thurs) also have found some new local water albeit with dubious ownership to try too! Fished the Whitewater yesterday slow going with very few fish rising and ended with a tally of a dace a chub and a pair of wild brownies the biggest one 8" and all taken on a size 14 tan elk hair caddis. Highlight of the day was a briefly hooked monster that came flying from his lair to take the fly, turned down stream and snapped my 5lb tippet in the blink of an eye.

Just come back from the Chalkstream. It was excellent, about 15 fish, mix of Brownies & Grayling. Biggest Brownie about 1lb, but as wild as they come. Also, have found a whole new stretch of river on the estate,it is deep, murky and very promising....
Fished the WW on Sat. Managed a dace and 3 trout - 2 8" wildies and a stockie. Two were from 'Jons Pool' that we discovered during the working party. The last two fish were on a small dry (size 18). They still seem to be much more wary of dries that they were last year though................

Started off at midday yesterday. Bumped in to Justin who was just leaving but had enjoyed a good mornings sport. Started off at dead cert corner, looking for an early confidence boost. I lost a fish in short order but my hopes were high for the rest of the session. Hawthorns were about as well as daddy long legs. Along the cowsheds I fished a hopper and somehow I managed to miss some really hearty rises. At this point I grew frustrated and my fishing started to suffer. The casting went totally to pot. In an effort to calm down I spent 20 minutes trying to suss out the trout rising under the road bridge. The one cast that I made in the ‘right’ area was met with a rise. Which I also missed. Finished off with a dace and one 10” wildie and countless pricks and missed rises to all manner of flies. Perhaps I need to start smoking again.
Don’t know what has happened to the stocked fish – I don’t think I have caught one this year. What a waste of money they are anyway.

I know that feeling - when you're really wanting to get something weighty on the hook for a change you often fish 'badly' and let frustration take over for a while.
Just been to Cockwill's and bought loads of tiny dries only then to realise that I'm not sure I have a thin enough tippet for them!
It's raining heavily now and I'd expect that the river won't be fishable until maybe Thursday as there is more rain forecast through till tomorrow.

Bri Bri, It looks like it will have to be the back end of the week as the river today is the colour of well stewed tea and more rain is forecast, will have a look again in the morning! Jay

Good stuff Morgan - same as Jayp, Jon (Pond321) and I. If you want to be shown round the river and the best spots we always refer to then let us know. As I said - I'm around this week so Thu or Fri would be possible if you can make it. You do have a 7ft or so rod don't you?
