You building a rod then Jon? What did you go for?
Be warned that you may find it somewhat addictive.....
Cheers,
Ben

Jon , I drive a silver civic on most days , sometimes a blue Rav4 .
Managed to get out to the river last night , started around 5 and finnished up at 8.30 . Bit slow in the beggining but the fish started to rise at about 7.30 and managed three on the dry , all great fish.
The pike was still there so pretty sure its dead !

Ah - Justin - you are on a different day to me - thought you might be chap I have seen a couple of times who drives a read hatch back. Does the pike smell nice? :-) There was a dead deer in one of the car parks once - it bloody reeked!!! Ben - the rod is the same 7ft #4 that Jay got. I had a go and was most impressed. Suspect my build quality will not be as good though. I nedd a 7ft 4# you see because my 7ft 3# lacks the power to deal with gold head nymphs. Honest. The URL for the blank is: www.mailordercentral.com/hookhack/prodinfo.asp?number=BKKRB04

Hook and Hackle - never heard of them! Seriously I built myself the 7'6" 4 weight, 4 piece from the same range. They are fantastic value and great to cast / fish with. By the end of the season we will all be using Hook and Hackle blanks and LaFontaine flylines.

Oh great. Just followed that link Jon and am now convinced that I need an 8ft 5wt, that I have built myself. The wife just can't find out about this latest "plan" or I really am done for. Jay and Ben. Was it hard to build your own? How long did it take? (perhaps I should just look in the rod building section ) cheers Dom (I know I don't fish the whitewater, but if I were to start a Wey thread I would be talkin to myself, so I like to think of myself as an Honorary member)

Jon, You will have to try my rod with the new Teeny line on it some time as it's now even better for water hauling , also you will get billed separately for shipping by H&H. Addictive! About to buy an 8ft 4# blank on ebay and my third build will probably be a 9ft 5# XP kit from Cabelas coming in at under £200 with TiCh guides the only thing that lets the kit down is the reel seat but that will be binned. Having borrowed Ben's copy of 'In the ring of the rise' I bought my own but ebay just mailed me this. cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7235736966&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

Bid placed :-)
Love the idea of building on a Sage blank. I 'need' a 9ft #5 so maybe that will be the next project

With apologies to Brian..... Dom - building a rod is straightforward. I struggle to put up a level shelf but really enjoyed my first build. It is a case of breaking the job down into logical chunks and approaching it in a systematic manner. Have a look at this. It is the first part of a really useful series of articles... www.flyanglersonline.com/begin/graphiteAll the best, Ben

Jay/Ben, Do you know the best suppliers of rod building kit in the UK? BrokeBackBri - I thought you were busy playing with (the flies of) the men you met on the internet Anyone fancy a trip anywhere on Monday - my friends are selfishly getting married on Sat so no fishing for me until Monday and the stretch of the Pang I fish on Mondays has just been stocked so will be rubbish I suspect. I am considering the Wylye.........or the RTSNBN........

anyway back to rod making............ Dom with a small amount of preparation the rod building is straight forward the only real pain in the arse for me was starting the whippings (single foot guides mean half the amount of whippings ), start to finish was about 5 hours for the 7ft 4#. I can see a bit of a rod building gathering taking place in the closed season......... ;D
