Fortunately we only had a couple of days down at 1'6'' which is as low as you want for flyfishing. Up again at the beginning of the week, now on 109, best of the last 6 years, & I hope we are headed for 120-130 for the season at the end of the month. Only 9 sea trout though, & we had 110 four years ago. Who's hoovered up all the sand eels? Anyway I'm treating Derek & his mrs to a good slap up on the last night of the season, & there still might be the odd rod available for 30th-31st.

The season has ended with 129 salmon to 20 lbs but only 9 sea trout. Best salmon result for at least 9 years.

Highest water levels presently on the Derwent in living memory, flooding in Keswick. No doubt there will be some damage but I hope I'm not being unduly optimistic by hoping that as much good is done in other places. Before this it was evident that there was an enormous number of spawning fish, so let's hope not too many redds have been washed out. Totting up what we know of individual beat catches, we think the total catch for the river in 2004 will be over 2000 salmon (& still no river report in Trout & Salmon!)

7 spanking fresh salmon in the last 3 days & a good height of water should mean the river is set to fish well again this September & October. Some big sea trout possibly to 10 lbs lost 2 weeks ago when it was still v low. And we now do have a river report in T & S!

Perhaps Anthony could post a weekly catch report? Or is no-one catching?

Perhaps Anthony could post a weekly catch report? Or is no-one catching? sadly no-one is catching at the moment. I was up there at the weekend living in the hope that some of the promised rain would hit the catchment. the river came up an inch or two, but that was it. really it needs another 6 inches on there to get fishing well again, and 12 inches for a potential bonanza. Again, rain is forecast for this week, so fingers crossed. There was a party of 20 or so rods on the Castle water last week, and only 1 fish was had for the week, by the gillie! Apparently there's a huge amount of fish waiting to come in, so its worth keeping an eye on the weather. HUGE numbers were caught a couple of weeks ago when the river came up 12 or 15 inches above the current levels, and it fished well for a good week or so after that. Amongst many others, a fresh 20 pounder was had from Anthony's beat on the back of that water too!

Thank you, Salar. Even negative reports are valuable when ones lives as far from the salmon as I do! As a rank beginner, I am finding it nearly impossible to plan how to arrive at a situation combining enough water, fish, available rod and accomodation!

Sorry I don't visit the forum as much as I used to. Good reason today though, peaked this morning at 3' & dropped back a little & 13 salmon were caught, best day's catch in 10 years! 27 in total for the last 6 days.

Another 7 fish in the last 2 days, now 2'6' & high pressure seems to have put them off the take today. River stuffed with fish. 49 now for the season so, given water, I hope we will again be heading over the 100 mark for the season by the end of the month.

2'6'' it says above! The marshy margins of Bass Lake & Derwent Water above act as a sponge modifying the spate characteristics. They also mean it doesn't often run dirty. With no rain drops about 2'' a day at this level then about 1'' a day below 2'. Fishes OK down to 1'6'' or so. So without rain there is water for 7-10 days. Showers forecast for Friday evening to liven things up again which is just as well as I'm off up there tomorrow.
