Disappointing weekend as showers stopped it dropping but did not put enough water in the system. Only Derek the ghillie managed to winkle a couple out & another one since.
Heavy rain last night has sent the river up to 5' so there will be plenty of water for the rest of the season. No quantity from now on please if you can hear me up there! Should be a lot of fish caught in a day or two.

>>A pity we have no Fishderwent!
Anthony, I believe that Fishscotland would add your river to their website. Certainly they have told me that they would add the Eden if asked to.

I had a couple of hours in Leeming's office 18 months ago re FishSpey, and he said he would only add English rivers when he had most of Scotland on, but he is a fair way towards that now. I'll pass your comment on to the Chairman of the Derwent Owners Assoc.
It would be great to have all significant British rivers on the system.

A 40 lb salmon was caught yesterday on the Howthwaite beat of Cockermouth Castle's stretch of the Cumbrian Derwent. The Derwent is just dropping from the peak of a large spate and the fish was almost certainly caught on a spinner.

After the haul from the previous spate we were a bit disappointed how few we got off the last spate. Yours truly blanked in the first half of last week, but at least my wife didn't! My last chance next Sunday & Monday.
Significant rain yesterday and four fish were caught, taking the total to 73 for the season. Clearly we are not going to make much more than 80 by next Monday night cf 129 in 2004.
River now up a few inches and running a little dirty.
Re last season we still don't have a definitive figure for the river but it must be over 2500 salmon as the Castle beats alone had 1900.

At the end of the season for the Derwent, my beat has 80 salmon & 16 sea trout.
Water has been the limiting factor this season, not enough of it till near the end of September & then too much too often in October finishing the season at 4'.

It was good to meet you, Andy. Malcolm also introduced me to the Famous Grouse earlier in the year on Speyside.

Fished Isel Sunday before last, middle and upper beats.
My mate caught a 9lber, a lovely beat with some great fly water. Need to practice my snake roll for the upper beat!
Derek the gillie was very helpful. He told me the story about Danes Pool and how the then owner caught 208 salmon to his own rod in one season!
I was impressed with the water clarity and the number of small fry in the margins.

There's certainly one place under a tree there where a snake roll would be handy, but generally speaking a left handed single spey is the cast for the beat. Uncoordinated people like me who cannot speycast for toffee left handed definitely miss out on fish by casting a right handed double and needing to be a rod length out from the bank.
The previous owner's record was set in 1988, the best year for Scotland in the last 50 years. His practice was to fish a pool by fly & then to rapala it, which practice is now banned!

Have to advise I have just sold my Isel Fishings beat, which some of the forum have fished, to a syndicate from Lancashire. Derek the ghillie is being retained, so if any of you want to fish it again, it would be worth giving him a ring in a few months when the new owners have settled in & decided how they want it to be fished.

Only fished it once, but Isel is a lovely beat. I think it is one of those beats where it pays to put time in getting to know it well.
ACT - suggest you spend the cash on fishing one of those easier beats on the Spey or Dee. ;D
