I'm a bit confused by your method. Once the leader is twisted, folded and twisted again, you should have a loop at either end and a "loose end" approx 1 third the way down the leader. On the thickest part of the leader, very near to where this "loose end" is, you tie a figure 8 knot. Then you trim off the "loose end". The end result should be: Loop at 1 end, then 4 twisted strands of leader, then a figure 8 knot, then 2 twisted strands of leader, then a loop. If it would help, I'll gladly send you a couple so you can see the end result as it may help. Let me know. Thanks for the offer Adrian but i'm almost there, i'm having problems working out the final knot, the figure of 8 knot. I am using this is a guide www.thaifishingguide.com/fishtechequip/techniques/knots/figure_eight_knot_steps.htmlThis knot requires the line to be doubled, if its doubled at the halfway (or 1/3) point both the thick end (4 strands) and the thin end (2 strands) will finish up touching each other. This also creates a new unwanted loop. I know i must have this wrong but i cant figure it out

Ok, i've got it When making a 3 section leader: 8 strands - 4 strands - 2 strands what should the legnths be in proportion to each other. For example, if you want to construct a 4.5 foot leader should the thick part be 2 feet, the middle section 1.5 feet and the bottom, the thinest section be around 1 foot. Would that be correct?

Just thought I'd resurrect this thread in case anyone hasn't seen it. I've tied up a few of these myself, and they do look really good. Anyone had chance to really try them out yet?
One question: I'm a little hesitent about the figure of 8 knot at the end. Tying the knot is fine, it's just I'm using 8lb line, and because of all the strands of nylon it's hard to get the knot to tighten really well... perhaps I should dab a little glue on. Anyone ever had one come undone?

Quick question:
How much do you need to twist; do I carry on twisting until the twists are really tight?

What breaking strain line would you use . great idea Berlin

Splash I havent tied any lately but I seemed to find that you didn't need to force more twists in, just allow it to twist as you go as to breaking strain I think it's a case of how big/heavy you want the leader to be. RichardB

RichardB The finer and longer the line the harder it is,i used a 6lb match line which is very thin and supple and it caused a few problems, degrease and dry your fingers first ;)helps

I tied a 4x6lb then a 2x6lb and a 6lb tippet all using loops to connect, but i had problems with turn over, i also couldnt get the 4x6lb to sink even after repeated applications of leader sink.Should i have left out the 2x6lb middle section and gone for a single 6lb or higher breaking strain line to help turnover?

I have made mine out of 8lb and others out of 10lb maxima ultragreen, and they seem to work well.

Has anyone used a drill to make there leaders with . I bent over a nail and twisted the line as one would do,then i hooked it over the end of the bent nail and got the wife to press the trigger on the drill, it makes life easier, mind you it was a short one ;D
