great post Carl One quick question. I have never made my own leaders and was wondering, the butt of the leader, should it match the thickness of the end of you're fly line or be slightly smaller? Would this be effective with just one size Singaporean Leader and then you're tippet or would you have to construct several of different thicknesses and taper down? Why is it called a Singaporean leader? mmmmmm thats 3 questions Paul

great post Carl One quick question. I have never made my own leaders and was wondering, the butt of the leader, should it match the thickness of the end of you're fly line or be slightly smaller? It should be about the same. I tied my first ones in 7lb double strength and they were perfect for a 5 weight. Giles was shown this with 30lb mono for big SW fishing and this would probably go well on a 10-12 weight. Don't over complicate things, just tie it with some ordinary mono an it will be fine. Would this be effective with just one size Singaporean Leader and then you're tippet or would you have to construct several of different thicknesses and taper down? Just the one will do. Try something in the 6-10lb categroy for your first one and see if it works OK before experimenting futher. Why is it called a Singaporean leader? Because Giles Johnson brought the info on how to make them back from Singapore. They use it over there quite often for Big game fish. Cheers, Carl mmmmmm thats 3 questions Paul

Wow it sounds like a great idea. I was looking at the other thread regarding the furled leaders and was completly confused but now this method seems so much simpler... it could be nice to integrate a small ring as well before the first twist... excellent stuff Fabien.

Hi Fabian. Personally I wouldn't add the small ring. This will only lead to hinging, defeating the benefits of the leader. Just add your tippet with a loop to loop. Cheers, Carl

Thanks Clydesider I found that one too, but don't understand how it is applicable to finishing the leader off where shown in Carl's picture??

Just tie the knot as the picture in the link above using the tage end and the rest of the leader. The knot goes in the whole leader and not just around it.

I've just tied up a "double double" leader and although its more work and takes a little longer its even better again.
I started with 24 ft of line and doubled that. When finished I folded over 2/3rd and twisted that in and then when that was finished I folded the thickest part over and again and twisted that.
I ended up with a 5 ft leader with 2 strands at the point, four strands in the middle and 8 strands at the top.
It too about 6 minutes to make.
Its a bit of a faff keeping the two ends apart for the first part but I managed by putting one strand either side of me whilst sitting down.
Cheers, Carl

quick question when you finsihed twisting the 2 strands you have a loop and a knot in the other end. do you then fold the end that has the knot in it 1/3 and the twist again and the tie a figure of 8 knot and trim thus giving 2 loops 1 of 4 strands and the other 2 strands
