Another good day on the Kennet. A crisp morning with ice forming on the rings, bright sunshine and spooky fish. Later was better with some cloud cover and 5 grayling and a stockie rainbow. Lots of bird life, a real bird called sophie, some vin rogue, steaks and a good natter. A wonderful Sunday...made better by the smell of lamb and baked mince pies from the Domestic goddess!

I obviously posted this in the wrong section (river updates!).
Rosie & I joined Andy yesterday. Very hard frost overnight, crisp and clear morning. What a gorgeous spot. After getting to grips with my new rod, learning how to clear the frost from the rod rings, and getting the line going out vaguely acceptably for nearly an hour, Andy came up and said 'I'll show you how I'd do it'. He did too: on his second cast he pulled out a small grayling. Grrrrrr!!
Lunch was splendid - huge, delicious sirloins from my favourite Smithfield butcher. And red 'poison' which did nothing for my casting as after lunch my first eight casts lost four flies but hooked two fish, both of which came off after about twenty seconds - thrilling. Nobody managed the large tallies reported a month ago, but we certainly had a splendid day. Thank you, Andy.
Best thing about grayling fishing: apparently it is essential to wiggle the rod on your cast so that the line does NOT land straight on the water. Suits me!

Just returned from Andy's Boxing Day jaunt. Many thanks to Andy for setting up a top day out - great to meet other forum members lovely company, picturesque fishing and a lunch that was, quite simply, an emotional experience If you've read the thread, fancy it but haven't done it yet - then I can thoroughly recommend the experience
