Gary, just looked in my Where To Fish book in the Kent section and there were no rivers mentioned.
Bloodworms won't work as well in the rivers mate!

Stour has been getting some good reports, although I believe it is all association water and neigh on impossible to get a day ticket. There are lots of rivers in Kent although most of them are given over to course fishing, although they have good trout potential given the right conditions. Try www.fishingnet.com/England/Kent.htm and persevere with some of the clubs as they might allow a madman with a fly rod to beat the water on a quiet day, on the proviso you give way to coarse fishermen. Be interested to hear how you get on.

I'm just wading through a book written in 1764 that reports good trout fishing in the "Stower". Which book would that be, Richard? A friend just sent me a couple of Wandle-related pages scanned from the London Angler's Chronicle of 1834, and I'm gradually tracking the accounts further and further back into the mists... Stickfly, have a look at www.cacg.co.uk and drop Ashe Hurst a line - he's based on the Cray in south-east London / very north Kent, and might just have the answer to your prayers if more fashionable fishing ain't easy to come by. Tell him I sent you, if you do! Theo

There is fishing on the Stour. Mid Kent fisheries have a syndicate with 3 miles, by the A2 and also at Chilham. This is a fantastic brown trout fishery with a sea trout run , unfortunately no grayling so it April to November fishing. Expect to pay £400/season with a 2-3 year wait to join.
There is also a club on the Darent near Eyrsford again a wait to join.
Regards Tim

Which book would that be, Richard? Aagh! Typo! 1787 not 1764... (I'm mixing it up with a different book altogether) A Concise Treatise on the Art of Angling by Thomas Best. Full of plagiarism and errors but an interesting read with great advice on rod and line making. richard

Thanks for your time gents.... I did actually catch a small ( 6oz ) brown on the Stour once but that was 28 years ago. And on a 6ft spinning rod too......Just a few schoolchums messing about trying to catch anything....... Didn't even know there were trout in the river, thought it was a stray.

When I lived in Sevenoaks I used to go to Farningham and Eynsford which had a lovely little river running through them. Very picturesque and a rather 'trouty' looking stream. I have a feeling it's the river Darent. Can't be sure if it has trout or has any good spots for casting a fly but might be worth giving Ensford post office a call to ask.

That is the Darenth FlyBri.
I recently read a book called A FISHERMAN'S YEAR: FISHING ADVENTURES IN ENGLAND AND NEW ZEALAND by John Parsons, circa 1974.
He lived in Orpington originally and describes fishing the Darenth and that it was stocked with trout twice, the last time in 1950s. He also describes fishing the Medway, mainly for coarse fish though.

This must have been done before but are there any good rivers to fly fish in Kent ? Many thanks....... G. I've only been a flyfisher over this season, so my experience is limited... the stour is the one that I hear talked about - even has a run of sea trout and salmon, though past grayling introduction attempts have apparently failed. Most of it is club controlled - the stretch within Canterbury city limits is free fishing and I have seen small sea and brown trout taken by coarse anglers when stickfloat fishing for chub. Mid Kent Fisheries stretch around Chilham mill is prime - check their website for details. I gather that the salmon and seatrout don't run much further upstream than this either. If your budget doesn't stretch to that Canterbury and District Angling Association (website is something like cdaa.co.uk) will give you access to pretty much everything downstream from Sturry. I know there are trout there... quite a few at that. My techniques just ain't been up to getting 'em in the net yet! Have hooked and played three in five trips. Membership will be under £100 for the first year. There is a long waiting list for the Fly Section... but (I'm still waiting) their stretch of reserved water looks just perfect! The Rother has had it's runs limited by works thanks to the waterboard. I gather that the Beult has some nice wee brownies in, but haven't fished it - club waters again I gather. The Upper Medway is worth checking out as well... BTW is free fishing at a wee stretch near Yalding, and within Maidstone town (no good for flycasting there tho') Tight lines.

www.lintonangling.co.uk for the Teise. There is regularly an ad in the back of T&S for a trout fishing club on the Teise. I remember reading an article in the late Salmon, trout and Seatrout about the Teise; trout, grayling and occassional ST. Jungle style fishing involving ropes for access! There are also ST on the Rother and Arun a bit further west.
