I'm a member of a small salmon fishing syndicate on the lower Exe (a few miles north of Exeter) and have a chance to go down tomorrow. However, as it's a two and a half hour drive it would be useful if anyone can confirm if there's a run yet/ water levels, etc. Should it not be in good ply when I get there any suggestions for nearby trout rivers? Also, is there a web site giving up to date information - my contact down there hasn't fished yet due to work commitments. Many thanks for any help.

Neil - this is a bit late to be of any help I'm afraid. I presume you mean the bit of water near Thorverton? If so, I know the bit you mean. For Salmon you are obviousely wasting your time at the moment - the river is very low inded. The good news is that the stretch that you fish is heaving with good Trout and Grayling as is the lower Exe in general. I fish upstream of Bickleigh bridge and there can be terrific sport if you hit it right. Clearly it is an evening job at the moment and you can fish on until it is too dark to see. Enjoy. Mike.

Mike, many thanks for your reply. As it happens I didn't get down to Devon this weekend, regretfully. The stretch of river I refer to is actually near Brampford Speke. I've been down once on a recce in early April - saw one pod of grayling behind a sunken tree and had them on small dries. Walked up the stretch, about a mile, and seeing nothing else came back and had some more sport with the same grayling. Not having chest waders with me that day and the water running fast and quite high couldn't get to a couple of good trout rising near far bank (heavily wooded our side). However, appetite whetted. I'm now annoyed I couldn't get there as I would have been delighted trout fishing - salmon or not. It would be good to have a chat sometime as distance and lack of local contacts is not ideal. Thanks again. Mike. Much appreciated.

Post up for info on how the river is if you are coming down - if I see your post quickly enough I will let you know. Mike.
