Although hot and sunny on Tuesday, Amesbury fished well below the hatch pool early afternoon. The fast water, under trees and riffles produced well on Grizzle pheasant tail. The lower wading stretch was particularly good. Above the hatches was dead. As the evening drew on Countess was lively as dusk drew in. Plenty of rises both trout and Grayling. Same fly and also the Iron Blue worked well.

Thanks very much for the report, I particularly enjoyed your long description of the waters a few days ago in the other forum, pity the SaDAC website doesn't have a similar feature. I'll be heading to fish there in a couple of weeks and was thinking of hitting the Countess stretch and the Wylye as well any other suggestions. I'm afraid i live far away and only get to visit occasionally so have only fished there a couple of times so far in the 2 years of being a member. Is it pretty much early and late at this time of year.

I fished the Wylye at Stapleford last Sunday afternoon. There was a lot of weed below the the old hatch pool.
There was not much top of water action, only the usual splashy small grayling rises. However I did have good sport fishing the margins and runs between the weed ,from Druids side, with a Klinkhammer.
Hope to get back there or Durnford on Sunday morning.

Glad to see a number of S&DAC members contributing to this forum. Hope many more do the same as I am sure there are plenty of good tales to tell.
Been out on the Avon and Wylye three times in the last week. At Stapleford had good sport very late one evening but the level of weed made it hard to find clear areas to target. A couple of large hatches after 8pm and caught a brownie of around 12 inches off a Black Gnat. Beware the barbed wire!
Managed to fish the Avon twice in the last three days. Had good sport with Sawyer style PTNs and Killer Bugs on Countess with a couple of brownies (one of 18 inces) and numerous grayling. Ratfyn Lake is looking very stagnant and the trout are all congregating in the very rare open patches of water. A PTN got me a rainbow of 1lb.
Fished Coutness again today with lots of cut weed floating past and the intermittent rain making it more than a bit interesting. Black Gnat did the trick again with one very good looking brownie and the Killer Bug accounting for 2 grayling.
Have got a free weekend this weekend and may go farther afield. Might try some of the stretches around Wilton as haven't fished them yet as it is my first year with the club.

In answer to the question 'Is it early and late?' on the Avon. Generally yes. However there are fish to be taken throughout the day if you work the shady areas and riffles.

As a new member of SADAC where would you guys recommend a stranger to the waters goes for his first visit, I like to fish where it’s quiet and offers a challenge. Your advice would be very much appreciated.

Hi Braveheart, Couple of years since I have been to SADAC waters but beats 7 & 9 at Durnford were always hard used, but peaceful. Great to hear that the fishing is going so well. Bob G

Would agee completely with Bravehart at Durnford is the quietest, most picturesque and rewarding fishing you can find.
Would also recommend the Countess waters north of Amesbury. Wide, slow and well tendered stretch of the Avon that is never too busy. Dry, nymph, try the lot, you will come back having had a great day!

I agree about the countess beat - I always start my day there. First thing in the morning its beautifull, with easy parking, no styles to hike over and loads of fish.
After a breakfast in the Fryer Tuck in Amersbury I will then more on to another beat.
Firtunately I have tomorrow off and will be doing just that.

My favourite SADC water for difficulty and peace is the Bourne at Gomeldon.
This piece of water runs very clear and the fish are very easily spooked.
There are some very big Grayling to be found along with a lot of smaller wild brownies.
For difficulty at Durnford I would suggest beat 16 if you are right handed. You will have problems casting off the forehand ( if this is the corerct term ). Great practice for back hand and steeple casts.
