Err, the John referred to above is NOT me. Though Avington is only a short drive from me, I'd never fish there (it's mainly a still water) as it has only a short, too heavily stocked stretch of the Itchen

I see even us un-skilled stillwater anglers can prevoke the odd rise :-)
On a different note I need some advice re. disabled access to our local rivers would you mind if I e-mailed you?

Lol. Not a rise at all, perhaps a movement to and turning away at the last moment. I find that very frustrating as in the timje I had to try all flies before tying on a Yellow May imitaion to (colour wise) imitate the fallen beetles the fish were feeding on.
Or 2 weeks ago when all flies failed to tempt rising fish and in desperation I tied on a #12 CDC Large Dark Olive. That worked exceptionally well with fish moving 3 feet to take it, yet whatever they were taking from the surface / subsurface could not be seen.
