I'm buying a travel rod (have a look at the Destination fly fishing section...) and those two are within budget and seem very good rods. So they would be my shortlist except if there's better in this price range (~£200, 8'6", #5, 6 or 7 sections)
Apparently the blank of the Missionary is a bit better, but I don't like the rings of Greys rods (they're not snail rings) so i'm a bit confused.
I'll welcome all advice!

I have a Missionary and find the action is too soft. It was my first rod and would now be the last one I use except for spooling line onto reels.

I have the 9'3" 5/6 mish. Really nice river rod - I mainly use it for bugging - but I would agree that it may be a little soft for some tastes....

Don't bother about the quality of rings on a rod. As most makers insist on using out-dated technology you'll have to replace the sanke rings aftr a year or so - might as well do it straight away and put some decent lined rings on. Then forget about rod rings for the next 25 years.

In general, the frequent flyer series has not gotten very favourable reviews. I can't think of any specific reason off-hand, but it sticks in my mind because I was, at one point, also thinking about buying one - but I was discouraged from doing so.
I recall the missionary getting slightly better marks - although not fantastic. The redington wayfarers did receive some favourable press and should be in the same price range. (No I don't work for redington, sage or sportfish).
Of course, as is currently being discussed on the 'general' board - you should take all equipment reviews with a heavy grain of salt.

I am also in the market for a couple of traveling rods - probably 9 ft #4 & #6. Have a couple of weeks trip booked to Montana in September and would like the rods to go in suitcases this time not the huge unwieldy (steal me I am a bunch of rods) KIS rod case.
At present my wife is being very smug with her 8'6" Orvis 4 piece in its 29 inch tube, fits very neatly into the big wheeled kit bag!
Don't fancy a missionary (action too soft for me)....... what about these new "March Brown" rods one sees on Ebay?

of the bunch the redington wayfarer is probably the best, although still a little slow compared to the latest rods on the market - havent tried the new 6 piece wayfarer yet though. The Cortland travel rods are very stiff for their rating.
where have you heard of KIS cases being stolen?

February or March maybe. As for KIS/sportube etc rod tubes getting stolen - remember that you are taking them to the US. And these cases can also be used for toting guns. In Montana, the guy carrying a big gun in a big case probably also has another, smaller gun stashed outside the case. An effective deterrent for opportunistic theft? Mike

I had a susbscription to FF&FT but it appears it expired around the beginning of the year... and of course unlike the American magazines, they don't appear to warn you and try to get you to extend your subscription. Net result arrive back home expecting a couple of months magazines to read, and found nothing! If anyone can scan that review (do we believe reviews?) and email it to me I would be appreciative. gb

Mike Mike the problem is perhaps not whilst one is in Montana, but when one's luggage is in transit at the various airlines etc. I was merely repeating something I had read a few times over the years in American fly fishing magazines. Apart from that, and having done it a few times before, the KIS cases can be a pain in the backside when one is toting other luggage too. I should point out that I did say that I was traveling with my (flyfishing) wife...... and although I have a tendency to take the flyfishiing equivalent of the kitchen sink, she takes the rest of the house contents, including (for all I know) the actual kitchen sink gb

I really like Grays rods in general but haven't used the missionary. I actually prefer snake rings too so they are perfect for me. Plus you get the life time guarantee. Didn't know so many people rated the missionary so highly as a river rod though.

I am flying off tomorrow and I have two 91/2 feet four piece rods in tubes which just fit the internal diagonal of my large wheeled suitcase. The points I am making is that a four piece rod will do the job admirably and this leads to greater choice. If you want something quicker in action than the missionary (which has a sedate action by modern standards), has snake rings, has a superb warranty and service and easily fits a large suitcase then I would strongly urge you to look seriously at a Redington Redfly 8.5 feet #5 (4 piece). It is amongst the best #5 river rods I have used for casting into winds. Good price too. rusty

Rusty I do have agree. I am using my Reddington Redfly 8'6" #5 this evening on the River Almond (Crammond) - it is indeed a lovely little rod. For delicate presentation it is adequate for sure.
When I'm out on the bicycle it packs perfectly against the side of my rucsac. A little different to the inside of a suitcase, but still it illustrates the point.
