I am off to Scotland to do some loch fishing. Since all my suitable rods are too long for air travel I am having to invest in a suitable 4 piece rod I have concluded that a four piece 9ft 6in. rod rated for a 7 line with progressive action would be about right. Can anyone support this view or advise otherwise? rusty

If it's for fishing for wild brownies I would go no heavier than a 6 weight. A 9'6" #6 would be ideal for that sort of thing.

As with all these things its a matter of personal choice. I prefer a 9'6'' 5# but occasionally have to go up to a #7 because of the wind. Remember most of the time you will be exposed to the elements. Regardless of the weather when you set off take waterproofs and a fleece!

thats the key - a #5 is great but often a #7 is required to combat the wind - and theres no shelter in the wilds so a #7 is probably a good all round choice imho

Totally agree with the above. However I know a number of anglers who use a longer rod, a 10' for example, because it helps clear the heather clad bank behind you.

A rod choice is a personal thing. I do find 10 foot rods a bit long for my casting style. I am concerned about wind and that is my reason for a 7 line. In ideal conditions I would prefer a 5 line but if the wind blows hard all the time I would be compromising my chances. Thanks for the comments. rusty
