Had all kinds of vests, they have all put strain on neck with the collars putting pressure on my neck, doesn't,t matter how much padding they put in collar it still has the weight pulling on neck, Have a Filson strap vest with no collar, weight is on shoulders now, far better than ordinary vest.

Cheap option: Any of the Columbia brand waistcoats. They have a wonderful neoprene panel right at the back of the neck to prevent exactly the problem you're describing. About $40. Even better if you've got the mooolah: The Strap Vest or Foul Weather Strap vest from CC Filson. Everything you need, nothing you don't, and Filson garments last forever. www.filson.comI have the Columbia and it's about 4 years old. No sign of wearing out, but when it does I'll be buying the Filson. Grouse

Matt Hayes has a Loop waistcoat. It's got neoprene shoulders as well. As an alternative, why not just get a fishing shirt? Should hold 2 flyboxes easily with room for tippet and loops to attach a zinger or two. Or get a small chestpack. William joseph or fishpond are good makes. Come on, you don't really need all that gear do you? The only thing stopping you is your fear of not looking the part. But you can do that by hooking a hog right in front of the dork with the overloaded vest and the sore back. I must, however, admit to coveting a filson strap vest. They are cool in a nostalgic sort of way. RTK

I carry one plastic fly box, 3 spools of different tippet, and the sum of the rest of the stuff in my vest pockets doesn't amount to 8 ounces including 2 zingers, clippers, and foreceps. It's the two bottles of water, 2 sandwiches, Cliff Bar, apple, and sometimes spare clothing that weigh me down. Fishing within spitting distance of the truck is nice, but it doesn't happen very often for me. Grouse
