Hi all
I now live in south-west of Gloucester and I'm looking for a tackle shop for all my needs!! In the short term I'm after a couple of floating trout lines #4/5 weight. Longer term, I want somewhere to browse, chat, buy salmon fishing equipment etc. I'm not terribly knowledgeable about equipment (or, for those who have read my posts previously, fishing in general!). I would like to find somewhere I can shoot the breeze and pick up some local knowledge.
Monmouth, Ross, Chepstow and Gloucester are all within a short drive.
Thanks in anticipation
Barny

Hi Barny There's sod all in Glawster - Gloucs Angling Centre on Bristol Rd has a few bits and bobs but not really a place to sort your needs. Your best bet is probably to drive to Sportfish at Winforton - about 10 miles west of Hereford. I remember you saying how much your wife liked shopping..... have a trip to Bath - there is a decent Orvis shop there plus Crudgingtons which is a really nice "proper old" gamefishing tackle shop. bfn Dave

For a fishing supermarket with friendly staff, try Veals in Bristol (much better than Cruddingtons-sorry Dave). Orvis in Bath is poor, unless you want a tartan dog bed.
For an olde worlde treat, try Sweets in Usk. The proprietor, Jean Williams, writes the T&S report on the Usk and knows more about salmon in that neck of the woods than most have forgotten.

No offence taken Tony - I bow to your superior local knowledge ;D Makes you realise how bad Glawster is though when Crudgingtons seems like a decent outlet. As for Orvis in Bath - I have to disagree with you, their Tartan Dog Beds are p*ss poor too ;D

Hi Barny,
Have to agree with Dave - Gloucester is a game fishing desert! There's All Sports in Barton Street but, to be honest, every time I go in there I get the impresssion that the staff feel I'm there to steal the stock. Not at all welcoming.
I also made the mistake of taking an old rod into Tedworth Tackle to have a tip ring replaced; it came back with superglue all over the blank. Ruined.
I order all of my stuff online & for advice & chit-chat I come here :-)
A.

Agree totally with AR. Veals in Bristol has everything you could possibly want. Only problem of course is parking the car C.B

Sure does Toby. Best of all it's got 'Steve'. The guy knows all there is to know I can assure you, plus he's a great bloke ;D If you pop in mention you're a Mate of Mike's the retired schoolteacher and he'll charge you double for everything ;D ;D C.B

Thanks for the replies. I've been off line as a had a week off and technical problems at home.
I have also tried All Sports in the Metropolis of Glawster. Not particularly helpful. In Lydney I bought Worcester floating lines for £34 each a tackle shop out of desparation. Helpful people but very limited fly fishing knowledge (I may have overstated their knowledge)
Sweets in Usk sounds good, thanks Tony. That's probably equi-distant to Bristol from here. I am surprised at the lack of good, more local shops.

Sweet's is fantastic - it really hasn't changed much since the 60s, it doesn't hold a huge range of gear but Jean is a legend and ties some of the prettiest flies you've ever seen. She should do as she's only been practising for over 30 years. Iits probably nearer to 40 but she wouldn't thank me for saying so, but I know she can't read this as her latest move to embrace modern technology was to get a push button phone!
Also about the same distance from Gloucester is the Gary Evans shop in Newport (town is a dump but the shop is OK) but if you need to see a big range of gear, if I were you I'd have a nice little trip up the Wye Valley and head for Sportfish in Winforton, about 10 minutes the far side of Hereford.
