Does anyone have any info on the R L Winston Rods.
I am referring to the D L 4 series which has been discontinued now, and is no longer on their web site. I have been offered a S/H one the 8ft #3, as its USA made I thought one of our friends across the pond may be able to help.
Thanks in anticipation.

I'm not from across the pond, but I do have a lot of their rods. I also don't have a DL4 but I do read the RLW Forum regularly and the topics on the DL4 continue. The DL4 was designed as a predominantly dry fly rod to be able to land large fish on light tippets. It had a strong butt section, but a very soft tip. There were Winstonphiles who hated the action, and some who said it was their best rod with a bamboo like action. If you've ever cast a BL5 then it may be a similar sort of action (very soft tip, not good at lifting heavy lines off the water or carrying large amounts of line in the air). It was designed to cast short to medium distances. There are still closeout deals on new DL4s if you can find them, either here or on the continent for around 300-400 euro or usd

I don't know this model but I suggest you email Winston Customer Support. They are quite fanatical about their rods and will be really helpful...be upfront and say you aren't buying a new one..it won't make any diffference to them.
However, at 8ft. for a #3 it sounds a little darling ;D The quality of build in their rods is just nulli secundus

I would like to use this rod for small brook and small still water fishing, I am getting more and more frustrated in trying to source a cane rod with the same dimensions for a reasonable price.

Simmel,
Foxons Tackle in St Asaph North Wales buy in the blanks and Arthur's daughter builds them here in the shop, they are truly a 'Fishing Tool' she makes an excellent job on them, think they have a website.

I truly love my Winston's but the DL series are odd little ducks. Those I've cast felt as though they bent halfway up the blank. Try as we might, we just couldn't find a line that would make that rod sing. IMHO, there is a reason that series was relatively quickly elimated from the Winston line. You might try locating a Scott 'G' series shortly. That series is to be discontinued soon to make way for the new 'crisper and lighter' Scott G2. The 'G' is a true classic and a sweetheart of a rod for exactly the type of fishing you are planning. The workmanship on the 'G' I would put on a par with the Winston though not quite as flashy.

Sounds as if the DL4 is not the animal you're looking for. Another Winston which turns up from time to time on eBay is their also discontinued Retro (or Stalker) series, and it may be just the ticket (fibreglass, with a slow cane like action)

As far as I know Foxons make all the new Winstons sold in the UK so they would be a good place to start. A good sign of how good a rod they are is that the shop staff virtually use them to the exclusion of others. Arthur told me that in his opinion the 8'9" LT #5 is the best trout rod made. They usually have a number of Winstons on their Used rods list. Try this link www.foxons.com

If you are looking around for this type of rod I would recommend that you also try the Sage TXL. In the 3# there is a 7ft and a 7'11ft. I have the latter and I absolutely love it.

I will have a look on the foxons web site, one of the things that attracted me to this rod was, its a four piece, and easy to transport. As most of my fishing is abroad and I have to fly everywhere, this is important.
For the fishing I would do with this rod, length of cast is not important. If it will chuck a straight line ten yards with an extra light tippet, thats enough for me.

if portability is the major factor, then have a look at the Winston LT 7'9" #3 (5 piece) (Foxon's can also make it up for you). I have this model, though factory built, and it is a fabulous rod and sounds the ticket for your applications. I used it on the Coln in Gloustershire to make bow'n'arrow casts to hook some nice wild browns.
