Imagine my surprise when I came across the Bloke XL50 salmon rod in a review of 'Spey sticks' in this months Todays Fly Fisherman (TFF) Imagine your surprise when I tell you that when judged on performance it only came 9th out of the 20 rods tested! The rods had their logo's covered so that the testers were unaware of the brand and they were tried out with different lines etc. This should be an interesting thread! Allrounder ;D

Were you surprised it came so high or so low? Which rod came 1st? and who were the testers?

I wouldn't know a good 'Spey casting rod' from a duff'un. Always been a mystery to me. "How do they do that " I must give it a go sometime. Could be useful on Chew on a windy day ;D

Spey casting isn't a mystery, it's quite easy really. Mind you, it's made easier by having a good instructor by the side of you.
Sorry WG, can't answer your question as I don't read the magazine in question.

Willie I'm not a salmon fisher myself but was surprised the Bloke didn't come higher, based on my own experience of their trout rods. Testers were Gary and Annie Champion (IPGIA instructors) and Tim Smith, the editor. Top rod for performance was the Guideline LPXe followed by the Redington Red Fly and Vision GTfour Catapult. The Testers favourite rod was the Guideline (Tim and Annie) with Gary going for the Fulling Mill. When it came to 'value for money', the Bloke never made the top 10! Rob I'm afraid they did. 'Spey Sticks' was the name they gave to the article which tested 15' salmon rods. Allrounder ;D

No doubt they tried to find some reason to mention Frog Hair in the article. The mag. is utter cr*p.
Who pays attention to tackle tests anyway!?

Was there a Shakespeare Oracle in the test?

Was there a Shakespeare Oracle in the test? The Shakespeare Oracle IV came joint 6th when judged on 'value for money' but never made the top 10 when rated on performance. Allrounder ;D

Ah... you forgot the perfect Spey line - a suprise to some - but the Cortland Ghost Tip I may be cynical, but I've read a couple of issues and it seemed to be fairly well 'placed' in a few articles.

Who pays attention to tackle tests? Oh I dunno - anyone who want's to gather some information on which to narrow down the prospective purchases they wish to try out perhaps? So anyone discerning, or at least attempting to be so...
So constructive.

half-decent..... but not as good as the other 8 or so rods above it?? these tackle tests are very constructive when they get qualified tetsers to do the reports. you cannot feasibly take out 20 rods to try, but i'd like to think i'd come up with 1 would purchase from the top 5 printed.
