I know in the UK you need to purchase a freshwater fishing license and a day ticket to fish a pond or lake, but do you have to purchase a license to fish saltwater?
Here in the US, each state sells a license and there is no license to fish saltwater.

You don't normally need a licence to fish the sea. The exception is if you are targeting salmon or sea trout within 6 miles of the shore.

When you say UK you mean England and Wales. In Scotland all you need for fresh water is a permit for the particular river or loch if required, it may be free. No license is required for fishing of any kind.

Some of the Border rivers in Scotland require an EA licence. The Border Esk being one!
