This is a dry pattern that I've been using for the past 15 years but have never seen it in anyone elses box. It's called a Haystack.
Hook: Up eyed dry sizy 12 - 18
Thread: Yellow
Body: A 45/45/5/5% blend of yellow, emerald green, orange & claret seals fur sub. The original had a 50/50 blend of yellow & green Rib (Optional): Fine copper wire
1. Set the hook in the vice and catch in the thread.
2. Wind in touching turns to just past the hook point.
3. Catch in rib.
4. Dub the above blend of seal fur sub onto thread and wind forward to the eye.
5. Counter wind rib to the eye & secure.
6. Whip finish & varnish.
Last night I used a variation of this fly to take four wild brownies & a chub in the space of 10 minutes. ;D
The variation had an olive deer hair tail & a grizzly para hackle. The para hackle was tied using the mono loop method. Basically you tie in a length of mono, having flattened the end and secure. Fold the mono over to form a loop and secure with a few wraps of tying silk leaving a long end to the mono. Catch in a grizzly hackle & wind around the mono loop. Pass the end of the hackle through the loop and pull the long tag end of mono. This closes the loop, securing the hackle. Put a small drop of varnish on the top of the invisible post as added security.
Another variation has a standard hackle tied bushy using 2 grizzly hackles.
I hope this pattern & variations can be useful to other members.
