nice one just what i was looking for. been tying a lot of bumbles recently. finding that ribbing it with wire often messes my fly up. it seems the hackle on top looks ok after being ribbed but the bottom side of the palmered hackle is in every shape.

There are two schools of thought on winding through hackles. The first one is to move the wire from side to side as you wind it, the theory being that any trapped fibres will slip out with the side ways movement.
The second one is to wrap the wire as quickly as possible through the hackle, the theory here is that the wire bends the fibres which spring out before they get a chance to be caught.
I was taught to tie the first method, but after reading about and trying the second method it is now the one I use.

No, just wrap it as quickly as possible from the tail to the head. Only thing I can add is be bold, falter and you may create a problem. Bear in mind though that you can unwrap if necessary and if it's not perfect the fish probably won't notice anyway ;D

I have been taught the wiggle method and providing you are patient I find no problems with it and seldom trap fibres.

That's the way I was taught too Piscator, and it served me well for years, but after reading about the other way I tried it , liked it and stuck with it. But at the end of the day both methods work, so it's down to personal preference.

I have always tied in the palmering hackle after dubbing the body too. I will have a go at tying in the hackle first next time i'm tying. I suppose it saves bulk at the head.
