Hi guys,
Here's a rather... different fly fishing destination!
My brother is currently working in Afghanistan (Kabul - not with the army or a NGO but as a consultant) and we're planning to meet up and go fishing in the area in July.
We were looking at what countries around Afghanistan (Kyrgzystan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, ... all these) had to offer and then my brother came up with this seemingly stupid idea:
"Well you know, there are amazing areas in North Afghanistan, especially in Badakhshan, and it's safe there as the trouble is in the South and East. I really want to see these places and I won't go if it's not in July with you."
After being seriouly against the idea, I'm starting to consider it given that we have sufficient protection and certainty that we're not walking in a USSR minefield...
What do people here think about that? Just imagine unspoilt nature, incredible surroundings, trout who have never - ever - seen a fly (they have seen dynamite probably, and electric fishing, but not fly). On the other hand, imagine being threatened by terrorists and poppy farmers and landmines...
I haven't made up my mind yet and i'll be interested to hear opinions...

PS: I didn't believe it at first but here's something incredible: there's a book about that, published in 2005 and called "Trout fishing in Afghanistan". The author is a French guy (I'm French as well) and I'll get in touch with him as soon as I read the book. Can you believe how lucky that is?
