I am considering arranging a salmon fishing trip for anyone who (like myself) has never caught one. I've already got a few people who said it's a good idea. Who would be interested in attending and where would you prefer to fish? How much money would you be about to spend and do you have your own salmon fishing tackle etc.
Also does anyone have any ideas on gillies or professionally arranged trips and if they are worth the money? Maybe if enough of us pool our resources we could speak to one of the more senior members on the site to help us out and arrange something to save money.
Discuss.

i calculated that my first salmon cost me £1,000 per pound - it was a 4 pound grilse from the cork blackwater.
my average is now lower but not that much.
the cost of organised trips scares the life out of me. i have found that fishing corporation water a few times to get to know it, and chatting to locals, watching and learning, reading beat maps and so on is all that i can afford.
i have fished the tay with gillies, good and bad. price is usually included in the day ticket price, but you will be expected to tip, higher if you catch. notice the word 'if'.

cheers nick1name, the more I read and research about salmon fishing in general the more it puts me off. It's a shame for a target species to be like this but I'm inclined to agree with you. Much the same as most things in life, if you've got the money to throw at it then you're bound to get results but for normal people like you and I there seems little hope.
It seems the whole salmon industry is a dark one and seems difficult for beginners to get a foothold in the sport. Maybe it's due to salmon numbers declining, who knows. Maybe I'm better off sticking with my trout and grayling.

i think i did not express myself very well
the first fish was a bargain!
i (you) can find good salmon fishing in england, wales, scotland, ireland, sweden, norway, us etc for about £40 per day.
i just won't afford an organised trip to far off places.
off to the morrum on a tuppenny airfare on monday.
bliss!
