I'm seriously considering a trip to Slovenia after reading an article in T&S. I was going to go with Kevin Smith's outfit as written about in the article. Doesn't anyone have any experience of Slovenia?
Thanks
Richard

I have a 4 day trip booked in September with one day being guided (probably with this mob www.lustrik.com ) and the other days on my own. There's a few from this forum going out in May/June so hopefully get some feedback from them. Just to wet you're appetite have a look at the Marble Trout! www.josko.org/ang/fish/marbletrout.htmNow that would put a bend in a 5#!!

I had a week at Branko Gasparin's place at Most na Soci last September. Unfortunately the day of our arrival (saturday) coincided with 24 hours of torrential rain. Two rivers we were looking forward to fishing, the Soca and the Unec, were unfishable all week, but I guess that's a risk you run whereever you go. On the Sunday all rivers were unfishable but by Monday we were able to fish on the Baca and had a few rainbows, biggest around two and a half pounds. By Wensday the Idrijca was clearing and we caught some nice grayling and small rainbows. The slightly cloudy water was said to be ideal for marble trout but we didn't connect with any. Trying to cast the enormous lead- heads, supplied by Branko, on a 5 weight was slightly hazardous. Beautiful rivers and I look forward to going back sometime, but next time I will get a guide for at least one day and pray for a little less rain.

I toyed with the idea of using one of the specialist companies to book my trip but I prefer to have a bit more flexibility. I got on t'internet and tried to organise things myself. I came across a chap called Rok Lustik who has a guiding service out there. His web address is : www.lustrik.com/He is a very helpful chap. Cheers Simon

Those rivers and fish are enough to tempt any angler. Wow. They look fantastic. I wonder if i could tempt the missus? Wishful thinking. Is Slovenia quite cheap for a holiday Simon? Handsome stick, can i ask how much your 7 days is costing? You can pm me if you dont want to post.
Cheers

Hi Tweed – This will be the first time I have visited Slovenia. From my own research it still looks quite cheap, however I get the impression prices are starting to go up as more people discover this hidden gem. My biggest expense was the flights. I’m flying with Air France from Manchester to Ljubljana via Paris and the flight alone is costing me 220 quid. Quite expensive really and I could have flown with one of the budget carriers but I don’t want to risk my precious fishing tackle with the likes of Ryanair and it would have meant driving down to Stanstead as they don’t fly to that destination from East Midlands. Rok Lustrik is arranging my accommodation which is costing approx 40 euro per night. All in all it is costing about 900 quid but that includes flights, accommodation, 5 days guided fishing, transport, airport pickup, meals and fishing permits. I’m sure you could find cheaper flights and some would argue that you only need a guide for a couple of days, but I would like to get as much as possible out of this trip as the next time I visit I won’t need a guide and I’ll know where all the good spots are etc … There certainly seems to be a lot of interest in Slovenia on this forum and when I get back I will type up a full account of my trip along with any hints and tips, and hopefully I will have some fishy pictures to post.

Cheers Tweed 7 days fishing, guiding every day, permits to fish, my own challet, half board, free local wines and soft drinks, pick up and delivery from airport, all travel to waters. £1165.oo Plus around £100 for the flight. I think that's reasonable. If I organised it almost myself I could perhaps save a few quid but... I thought I'd leave it up to the experts. www.sloveniaflyfishing.com/

www.sloveniaflyfishing.com/ - these are the guys that Reg Colley (a casting instructor in the NW) recommended, I think he said he is going with them this month or next with Paul Proctor - from what Reg told me, Slovenia is quite a trip..

Only thing to be aware of is the runoff from the Alpine mountains... early spring tends to be better than later spring because of the glacial runoff. I fished the Sava in mid May two years back and it was dangerous for wading from runoff. Still, there were always attractive side feeders to focus on. Caught my life's largest rainbows on the Sava. Some Welsh angler outfished the bloody lot of us internationals (including Slovenes) using small emerger hare's ears one afternoon! River was so big we were all using bead and cone headed everything (as per fishing shop advice) to get the fly down, and he had it all in the bag on size 16 fluffy nymphs on a slow retrieve! Just read on a Hungarian site that Slovene streams are high right now. You should check out the English language SLovenian fly fishing forums at www.josko.org/phpbb2/viewforum.php?f=10&sid=137e87d3d3fdc57373a90adee18d95aa

get a cheaper flight to Klagenfurt (Austria) just over the border. I think ryanair fly there, check it out. Fishing permits were expensive at £ 20-25 per day on the Sava Bohinj......beautiful though....and well(maybe over) stocked. At least the bit i fished was. Beer cheap.Beer good.Food cheap.Food good. Fishing good(though expensive) scenery fantasic. Must go back on fishing trip ! Well recommended.Excellent coarse fishing too is you're interested.
