I am trying to gather as much information as i can about fishing for Huchen, but information is proving very difficult to come by.
I plan to fish for this species on the Dunajec & Poprad rivers in southern Poland. I would like information about the actuall species itself as i know very little at the moment, its preffered habitat, its main food source etc. What fly fishing set-up is best suited and most important, what tactics to employ (i believe the Huchen does not give itself up to easily).
Regards G

Let me know if you fancy another expedition volunteer! I've been eying this up for a while but haven't really got my @rse into gear to collect all the information required.
Had an email from Jeremy Wade who in addition to the large fish / rat imitations, suggested "One technique that might be worth a try is fly spoons, as used by the Victorians for mahseer"

Were'nt they introduced into the Thames a long time ago? I remember being told that the large splashes we heard in the middle of the river might have been surviving huchen.

Hucho Hucho is neither a trout nor a salmon, it's a huge member of the char family. They are ferocious predators, feeding on almost anything that will fit between their jaws, and that is a lot my friend.... They also live in Siberea, where they feed on small mamals like rats atc. Their most common prey though is fish: mainly trout, as these live in the same habitat. A heavy single handed rod, # 8 and more will do. A reel with a more than good drag is a must, and flies? Streamers, Rabbit zonkers, up to 7-8 inches long.... Hope you have a good time, oh, almost forgot: a good unhooking device, they have rather frightening teeth... Cheers, Hans.

Are the Siberian (and Mongolian) fish not Taimen?

Correct, but as far as my information goes it's the same specimen.... only the Siberian and Mongolian ones grow even bigger than the Europeans.... I might be wrong though, in that case my apologies, we're all here to learn are we not? Hans.

just gogled it the Mongolian is a very close relative of the Danube Salmon. They are not the same species. They are not a member of the char family but related to both chars and trout/salmon.

I do a lot of fishing in Slovakia, on the Orava and Vag where Hucho are caught. It seems they are not common, or at least they tend to be caught by trout fishermen on an irregular basis. They lie in deep pools and eat larger fish - asp and trout - so few fishermen - who are mainly drifting nymphs on a short line in those areas - actively prospect for them using large streamers. I know two fishermen who have caught Hucho, both were surprised, and both used large streamers ( a zonker strip muddler and a wooly bugger.)
If you get serious, the Drina river in Serbia ( the part that flows as a border between the Republic of Serbia and Bosnia) is one of the best rivers for Hucho around, so I'm told. The town of Bajina Bašta has a hucho festival every year.
