Hi there,
I was wondering if anyone had stayed at the Blackwater Lodge, on the Blackwater River, near Fermoy County Cork?
It's advertised in all the main FF magazines, especially trout & salmon, also in the Great Fishing Houses of Ireland.
I stayed recently in search of a springer and the river and beats are fantastic,
Linda Powell would be one of the most approachable and skilled instructors I've ever met, so from an angling perspective it get's top marks.
It has just been voted The Lodge is voted 'Best Fishing Hotel/Guesthouse'
in the Today's Flyfisher Magazine Game-Tackle Awards 2005.
So obviously it is held in high esteem. BUT the only thing I found is they are not shy to say fantastic fishing, 1 star accomodation (alias sh!te).
To be classified as a Lodge or Hotel, of any asteem I think a certain basic level or standard of accomodation is needed especailly for the prices that the Blackwater charges for Rooms and Meals.
Basically the rooms are make - shift, poor heating, no TV and in mine the lights were faulty. The meals are cooked by Linda (the guide) and there is really no service.
To be 'rustic' and a basic gathering place of fishermen is fine, but to use the word as a cover for shabby accomodation run on a shoe string bugget is taking the mickey. You see it in the wimsical smile as they take your money. Or the frown when you decide to eat outside of the lodge.
I am pretty laid back when it comes to angling acomodation. But all I can say is if you are going to stay at the Blackwater, don't take the wife she'll refuse to enter the rooms, and tell you your getting ripped off.
I was not the only person who left the lodge slightly disgruntled, wealthy americans and a welshman aslo left disgruntled, refusing to eat in the lodge on the last night.
My question is, what's is the basics standards you would expect of a 'fishing lodge' before you feel slightly ripped off?
Cheers,
J.
