I have decided to build my own 3-4 wgt 7- 7'6'' fly rod after checking the prices on ebay, i figure it is time. I have wanted to do it for some time. So I am having trouble finding a 3 piece blank that i can start with for reasonable money. Being only 28 and just bought a house etc, money is tight so we are talking 150-200ish. I know it's not much but there's go tto be a way. Any suggetsions of where to get one.. I think i can build the rod from culm that is at least planed and binded, i am not sure about creating the taper, but i can try. So maybe that will find a blank for a decent price, b/c i know the taper will of course cost some. Or another idea, can i get a 3 piece rod from ebay (8-9ft) and strip it and start from that blank and creat the taper i am lookign for? So please feel free to write away and hopefully i will get some good ideas from all of you.. thanks

hook and hackle, lathkill, hopkins and holloway. Plenty of choice.
you should be in NZ, I haven't found any decent prices, suppliers etc. The kiwi $ is pants against the US$

Cork, are you in the UK? Only I saw that you posted the same query on the Classic fly rod forum. If you're talking pounds rather than dollars, Chapmans will do a three piece blank for the type of money you're looking at.

Hi,
Just picking up on your point about modifying an old rod bought off ebay. Most of the old 3 piece rods had quite uninspiring tapers generally, so unless you want a slowish action you are unlikely to get what you want but there is no harm in experimenting.
Sanding down a blank to revise the taper will have all the old masters rotating in their graves as you will be committing the sacriligious act of removing powerfibres. How deleterious this really is depends on the nature of the original cane. If you get an old rod for £30 you have not got much to lose but only remove a few thou at a time before checking the effect. The old rule of thumb is a 4 thou change in diameter equates to a change of one line weight but this is very crude and is more nearly correct in the tip section. Check out Hexrod for a large range of tapers.
