What is the best material for a rod.Just the rod not the eyes or the fittings. I think it's fair to say that for most circumstances these days it's some form of high modulus carbon fibre weave 'flag', impregnated with an equally hi tech resin, that's been wrapped around a steel mandril, rolled, compressed, baked, ground (generally fiddled with) and then vibrated of the mandril - hey presto - rod blank. Put a label on the blank and, depending what the label says, sell it for not much or mega bucks! Simple really - surprised more of us don't do it and cut out the middle man!

You are probabely correct but fishing is about more than efficency. For nostalger can can't be bettered.

Richard I would like to develop the point you make about cane. I dont agree, I think that for rods under 7'6" there is no better product than a good cane blank ( Chapmans et al ). After all distance is not an issue, you wont be casting it all day and there is nothing like cane to produce delicate, soft landings with small flies or accuracy come to that. Alternatively for the tackle tarts there is the" Orvis T3 with super-high-modulus graphite fibre wrapped in a thermoplastic-enriched, thermoset resin sheath" Whatever spanks your monkey I suppose. These days, most people can cast as far as they need to,and most spend their time casting much further than they need to,especially me! So why not add a little caracter, charisma, and visual pleasure to your trout fishing by using a cane rod? I never use more than a#6 rod for nearly anything anymore, and you often see me with a #4. Its an attitude of mind thing, really, but it costs me no fish,or I would'nt do it! A fairly brisk actioned#6 in cane has amazing capabilities once you get used to it,and will certainly give you the maximum bank cred,if only as a weird eccentric who still catches a disconcerting number of fish. Thats because the rod does'nt matter much, really, but don't tell them! So go for the fun,and get chapmans to build the blanks, unless you want to wait until your grandchildren are drawing their pensions,in which case ask me! Robin

Those interested in this discussion could do worse than download the latest edition of powerfibers from www.powerfibers.com/html/current_issue.htmlNice article by Ralph Moon on page 33 about his experience with different rods over the last 70 years. Always a good read whatever your views. Happy new year Gary Marshall www.finecanerods.com

I'm not ignoring you ACW! Just thinking of a nice way to remind you that, for two people who richly deserved to die young, nay!even depended on it,we find ourselves to be anachronisms. What cane rod do you want then? And don't forget to update me every time you change your mind in the next millennia ,or so. R

Robin , Was a time when I never expected to hit 21 , now i see me having to work thru my 70s , so seeing as from your comment i can get a mind transplant ,I would go for an 8 footish for a #4 line . thats with this mind . Were I younger and fitter might go for a 8.9 for a 5/6 for fishing the Kirkaig for summer salmon ,lungs would,nt cope with that climbing up and down mountain sides !
