ive been lucky enough to bag one of the greys GRX's 7' #3/4 being sold off for £33 by harris - bargain to say the least!
Ive recieved it and i am well impressed for the cosr, my only criticism being the graphite/gunmetal reel seat. IMO it totally throws the rod out of balance, even with a light reel syuuch as my ultegra 3/4.
I want to remove it and replace it with a cork sliding band style fitting as they weigh nothing at all - so does anyone know how to remove the reel seat without damaging the blank?? Ive managed to remove the end cap (which weighs about 1 3/4 tonnes itself!) and the reel seat looks like it might be held on with a healthy dose of epoxy?
Thanks

Try immersing it in hot water until the epoxy melts a wee bit then twist off.

If that doesn't do it you will have to saw it off which will take a considerable amount of care to do without damaging the blank. It can be done though.
Is the carbon fitting really that much of a problem to you ?
Dave.

The few times I have removed a reel seat I used a small junior hacksaw. Put the rod in a vice "with soft jaws" or hold in vice with a bit of cardboard to protect seat The trick is to saw in a spiral & ease up cut part with pliers. If you are careful you will not damage the blank & you might find it will come away quite easy after a few inches of cut. Tight Lines

Try warming the seat by holding it over a candle. Personally I detest the sliding band fitting you like so much!
I had my 7' 6" Hardy Marquis changed from a friction sliding band to a screw winch as on the 9' Marquis and above.

Hi,
It can take quite a bit of heat to remove a reel seat (or ferrules for that matter). If the hot water idea does not work try a hot air gun on a medium setting, you are not trying to melt it. Play the heat around evenly and when it gets too hot to touch stop and let it cool down, better still immerse in cold water. Keep repeating until you succeed or get bored. Use a thick glove to try and pull it off each time and protect the cork with several sacrificial layers of masking tape. If you do not succeed use a fine handsaw working your way around the blank using only light pressure and be pleased you are working on a hollow blank so adding a new extension will be easy! Oh and remember Newtons well known law "to every action there is an equal and opposite reaction". You would not be the first person to pull off a reel seat and at the same time smash the other end of the blank.
