Hi all, I have a question for those who know. If I were to build a rod from a top notch blank, if I broke a section, I mean when I brake a section, is it possible to buy replacement segments? If not, then if for example I had built a rod from a sage blank and had to make another then one breakage would negate any savings made by building my own, so is it cheaper to buy the rod from the manufacturer and take advantage of the lifetime guarantee? And can anybody recommend a very good blank for less than a hundred quid? Cheers

I've broken a couple of Sage rods that I built myself, through carelessness. Both times Sage replaced the blank for 'carriage costs' , no trouble. I'm pretty sure the guarantee applies to the blank as it does to a finished rod, although I've not checked small print lately.
What sort of blank are you looking for?

All the top blank manufacturers will replace as long as you pay administration costs. Sage, St Croix and G Loomis. For top blanks under £100 I'd look across the pond. have a look at www.rodbuilding.org and their sponsors on the site. Most have superb offers on blanks. I can also give you a few dealers names. I have one chap in the US who can supply G Loomis unbranded seconds which are as good as new for next to no money. A good place is hook and hackle. www.hookhack.com - if you register your email they will send out monthly specials emails and most stuff is at least 20% off normal RRP. They do a lot of rod building gear. This month special is " Buy a G Loomis GL3 Blank at our normal Retail Price and get a free component kit (value $35-$55). The 20% Internet Order Discount does NOT apply to this offer.

Thanks for the advice Gents, much appreciated. Pete, the type I am looking for is something as good as a Loomis or Sage, but for a lot less than built cost. I want a cheaper one to practice on, my idea was to start with a cheapish 8'6 #4 for light work and then get a top quality one (9'6 #7) for reservoir work where I will notice the difference. I dont really like my Greys GRX which is broken again, on a Cheapo Daiwa Pro fly ay the moment, excellent value but not exactly a pleasure to use. Scottrods, these Loomis seconds, are the faults just cosmetic or do they affect the action/life of the blank? Cheers again Gents.

I've fished with my IMX for 3 years no problem. Just cosmetic. No warranty though. www.tomwhite.comhe regularly sells on ebay too. Can pick up some crackers. I got an IMX 4 weight, 8' for £30 + p&p once.
