A great start to the day.... even if SM hasnt quite woken up yet ;D after that lovely fish it was a good two or three long minutes before the next one obliged - awesome fishing,I felt in the presence of greatness "I always seem to do well on weirpools" He says, and no, it isnt a snag that's bending his rod And so to sunday at Garway: plus ca change: and again: ...what? not another? Look, I'm trying to fish, you're going to have to take your own piccies ;D Might it be a snag this time.... Here there be some very big trout.... Lovely stuff - that section above is in for some particular attention...... watch this space ;D

Nice pics. Great scenery. Big fish! That last grayling looks like it could go close to 2 pounds. ?More?
If those are the ones you decided were picture-worthy - then there must have been many unphotographed others that would still count as 'specimens' where I normally fish. Nice work.

Great looking rivers and wonderful fish - looks like you had a great time. Will need to figure out where these rivers are and pay them a visit.

Mike, that last grayling was one of the smaller ones!! I kid you not! At the risk of sounding like a miserable bastard it was also out of season. Why is it that the close season for grayling is so often ignored, imagine if you went to the Wye in November and posted pictures of all the salmon you caught on Allys shrimps I realise you might not have been targeting grayling Lovely rivers and fish though Andy

Why is it that the close season for grayling is so often ignored, Lovely rivers and fish though Andy Yeah you do sound like a miserable b*stard Andy - joke ;D ;D htough thanks for your comments about the rivers and fish. No, actually I do agree with you in principle. Sewinman and I would have been more than happy to catch trout all day but the chief culprits in ignoring the season are the grayling themselves. My feeling is that the grayling are yet to spawn on the Monnow system. The tactics we were using were basic upstream nymphing NZ style and a bit on the dry. The runs, riffles and pools we fished were holding both trout and grayling. The only way to ignore the grayling would be not to fish at all - and that is not an option The Monnow has a very large head of grayling and they are an extremely sporting fish - all were treated with care and respect before being released. Seriously - if anyone has any suggestions about how we can discriminate against catching grayling - I'd be interested to hear them.
