I half expect from your user name that you might not be a stranger to those parts, but have you sussed where to go as permission to fish the Eden is hard to come by?

Nicepix i am originally from the area and cut my teeth fishing with both the Appleby club and the Penrith club. There are several stretches of the water all available on a day ticket basis. If anyone is interested in fishing the Eden the best people by far to speak to are John Norris, they know the water inside out and are always willing to help. They even produce a map of the river with all the contacts on and who owns and runs which beats. The Eden fished its socks off last year as far as salmon and sea trout were concerned. Hope this helps. By the way Iceman it is in the North west near to Penrith about one hour 20 minutes from Manchester. The prices vary from about 10-35 quid a day.

Thanks for the tips. I have been trying to find a decent day ticket length for ages. The old Northern Angler's Handbook isn't much help and I had no luck tracking any down when I had a ride up there last year. Being a devotee of Arthur Ransome I dream of treading in his waderprints. I hoped to get the early train from Settle, walk to the river as he did and fish the Eden near Castle Rock. Failing that any length of that beautiful river will suffice.

Clive the upper eden is ran by Kirkby Stephen AA the contact is either Mr Kilbington on 01768 371495 or Mr Alderson on 01768 371337. You can get day tickets from these contacts.
The next strech down is Appleby AA the contact there is Mr Pigney on 01768 351240. Day tickets available.
The next beat is Penrith AA contact Mr Tom Rosling 01768 862418. Day tickets available.
There is a lovely stretch just above Penrith which is ran by The Lazonby Estate contact Edwin (one of the nicest most knowledgable men who ever lived. 01228 580122. This has 4 beats and a vast amount of water. Day tickets available.
Hope some of this info helps please feel free to get back in touch with me if you need anything else about the area. I would certainly recommend the river to anyone at any stage because there are easy bits and very difficult stretches.
Traditonal north counrty flies tied sparsly work a treat.

Hello, I was fishing in the Eden at Carlisle last week and had two nice (2lb+) brownies on dry black gnats. Day ticket from the tackle shop in Carlisle was only £5. Also had some nice Grayling out of it last year. To get back tom your original posting I would be happy to join you for a day if you want to arrange where and when. Regards Tog
