I know that there are several sponsored teams that visit here, so thought I'd ask for a little of their advice. Next year I am going to start competition fishing in a team of 6 in the TFEO, ITC (if it goes ahead) and maybe a few smaller comps. And all 6 of us will be competing in the WSTAA team trials in 2006. I have never done any competition fishing before, but I couldn't refuse a place in a team of very experienced and successful welsh anglers when I had the offer. I think I'm the only one in the team who hasn't had a Welsh cap, and the list of their achievements is endless, I am without doubt the odd one out Anyway at a recent team meeting it was decided that we should all make an effort to find some sort of sponsorship, even if it was just a few caps, realising that the chances of anything greater were very slim. Has anyone got any good ideas to find sponsorship other than just sending shed loads of emails to tackle companies etc, and hoping for one to take pitty? Looking forward to hearing some suggestions. Paul.

Paul,
If you haven't got anything sorted out by the end of the 2006 competition season drop us an email.
We'll sort you out with caps, fleeces etc.
I'm afraid we can't do anything until the 2007 comp seasn as we are spending our time (and money) building up a catalogue of fly tying tools, materials, fishing tackle etc.
Regards, Terry

I can sympathize with you completely; it is extremely difficult to get sponsorship. Getting tackle discounts is relatively easy but actually getting money from companies is very difficult. The only team I know that have achieved this is the network appliance team. They receive as far as I am led to believe around £5000 a season.
This is a great deal but you must be able to offer a bit in return such as exposure, the Network team are very successful and will receive a fair degree of publicity most seasons.
A website is a good idea; your sponsors would then have advertisement through your team’s site.
It is a real uphill struggle but if you keep plugging away and can achieve some success next season I am sure you will make some headway.

If your all from the same area try contacting the tourist board for the area, I believe the Welsh board are makeing a big push on the fishing in wales, they can only say no. I would have thought that having 6+ anglers spreading the word at internatioal events would be a good ploy. jim

Paul
You have to be a lot more hard-headed and pragmatic about this sponsorship stuff.
In your approach to a firm, merely conclude with the following:
"And if you don't sponsor me, PUNK!, I'll set Paul Boote on you...
I expect to hear from you by end of play today - got it?
Or...
Yours etc"
Should concentrate their minds wonderfully, Paul. Let me know how you get on.

You will be able to get discounts and freebies fairly easily as it costs the companies relatively little but to get them to actually cough up cash is next to impossible.
But good luck!
