Flies & Hooks Matches shall be fished with artificial fly only. Flies may be dressed on single or double hooks; tandem flies are not permitted. In the case of a double hook, the angle between the bends shall not exceed 90 degrees and, when viewed from the side, the bends must lie one behind the other. No fly shall be artificially weighted. No more than 4 flies, only one of which may be dressed on a double hook, may be mounted on a cast and flies must be at least 20 inches apart. Hooks may not measure more than five-eighths of an inch overall, including the eye. The overall length of the fly may not exceed fifteen-sixteenths of an inch. A full set of the loch style CEFF rules can be found here, www.soldierpalmers.co.uk/ceffrules.htmhope this helps. ;D

Thanks Simmo.
Just for arguments sake, what would be the situation if a fly measures the correct size when measured but when pulled through the water exceeds 15/16ths of an inch.
For example. If the fly had a 1.5 inch radius hackle that, when pulled through the water folds back and makes the fly 1.5 inches long? When measured the fly would be within the limits but when pulled would exceed them.
I notice that flies must not have any artifical weight added but what about artificial buoyancy? are Boobies competition legal?

Carl, the fly in question would be illegal.
Boobies are legal as the eyes are not considered as adding weight. It's basically lead underbodies and goldheads (as well as excessive ribbing) that re not allowed

Boobies are legal as for your first point the fly must be the regulation size when wet. During some matches fly checks are carried out on the water, usually between drifts. Obviously at this point the fly would be checked, if found to be oversized the angler would be disqualified. ;D

But if the hackle springs back to its normal position even when wet would this still be illegal?
Does this mean that a fly when "manipulated in any manner must not exceed 15/16ths of an inch"?

Berlin,
Yes thats how the rule is interpreted at International / National Level, for the Lakes Matches.
The Rivers National and Internationals are the same size hook, but it must be barbless or debarbed, and that can have added weight in the dressing.
For the Fips Mouche World Championship there is no restriction on size of hook, provided it is barbless or debarbed.

If memory serves me right I think I read somewhere no more than 4 points, which could mean a two fly cast of doubles or 4 singles cast, some comps insist on, no more than 4 points and other no more than four flies.

Am I right in thinking that you can only use a maximum of one double on your setup? Not sure why I have this in the back of my mind....
Although I guess it chanegs from year to year and from competition to competition.
