The water was very green but there was a reasonable visibility. My team, The Bewl Piscatorials, had been up for a couple of days with me joining them the day before.
The practice day was quite good. There were fish obviously on the pin fry and those patterns took fish. However it was clear that they weren't the be all and end all as a Blob or Booby ahead of a couple of nymphs would also take fish. Or as washing line. Slimes or Di 3 were our preferred lines.
On the practice day my first two fish were from Savages. A four pound rainbow and a Six plus pound Brown. On then to the tower where a lot of boats were. A couple of drifts close to the Tower produced fish. It appeared that this was full of fish. We then went around the reservoir, Gaynes and along the southern shore. We took the odd fish all along.
Our conclusion was to head for the tower and possibly five fish per man was needed.
Competition day saw the bulk of the boats head opposite the jetty to the tower. A couple went to the dam and were joined later by others. There were fish to be had. Rods bent quickly and fish were coming. However it soon died off. I had a couple of fish to the pin fry but struggled really. So I went to Savages and picked off two more.
For the last half hour I went to the left of the lodge and had a follow to the coloured stripe on the tip of my line.
At the weigh in there was one team with the 30 fish and the rest between 18 and 22 fish, so it would be close for the three teams going through.
Bristol had the 30 fish and first place. Second was Chingley Chompers of Bewl with 22 fish then Bath and District also with 22 fish.
My team, Bewl Piscatorials, were fourth with 21 fish and six ounces short of Bath !
5th was Team Snowbee 22 fish. 6th Go Fishing Worldwide. 7th Bewl bridge 8th Fulling Mill Weald of Kent. 9th Kerrier park Flyers. 10th Ouse valley fishers.
Rod average 3.37 , Average fish was 2lb 6oz.
Flies were varied but small black and pinfry. Our best bag was seven fish taken at the tower on Mc Kays.
Most used slimes. But there were Di 7 and other sinkers used. Some fished slow and others pulling.
It was an enjoyable event and quite close at the weigh in which added excitement to the day. There were some cracking conditioned fish. The best of the day was caught by Adrian Necci of Fulling Mill at 61/2 lb.(Rainbow)
The best bag was seven fish for 18lb 1 1/2 lb.
