Eddie, Used for achieving very fast retrieves. Tuck rod under arm allowing both hands to be used to strip the line one after the other. Striking can be a bit of a task using this technique as I suppose you have to get the rod tip up by leaning backwards. Hope this explains. Rich

www.fishandfly.co.uk/ffedit0901.htmlCheck out the link above for an article from Fish & Fly regarding retrieves. Roly Poly is under section 'Fast Retrieves'. Probably explains it better than my attempt. Rich

Ah! Ive seen this done but didn't know what it was called. I guess they don't want to knacker their trout out by making them chase speedy flies ;D! Or possibly to avoid deep hooking .

The Roly Poly!!!! is a technique used to retreive flies at the same pace.... you can roly poly faster than conventional retrieved flies if you wished.. you do not however, need to 'lean back' whilst practising this! just tuck the rod under your arm pit, in front of the butt....and pull the line with one hand, then the other keeping contact.. 'Milking the cow' is another name...the trout usually hook themselves and the awkward time is then getting the rod to hand! This can be used to fish flies slowly... a good alternative to the figure of eight.. and useful if you suffer with arthritis as I do and cannot employ the Fig of 8 for long periods.
