After a few years of chucking fluff at fresh water species I would dearly like to turn my hand to the salty stuff. I would appreciate any advice on suitable salt water tackle. I take it not all reels are suitable. I presume I'll need an 8 or 9 weight rod rather than my trusty 10ft 6/7 wt. Can I set up without a huge cost? I'd rather not mix my existing gear with salt water so what do you suggest? All help gratefully received.

I felt exactly the same as you this time last year, Stella The good news is that you do not have to spend a fortune (unless you want to of course). My starter kit was a Airflop SLS #8/9 (£69.99) coupled with a Okuma Airframe 7/9 (£29.99) and a home made #10 intermediate shooting head made from a mill end DT line and braided mono shooting line (less than £10). I've since upgraded the rod to a Bloke #8. For suitable rods and reels have a look at Veals. You will need to enter their store and click on 'salt water fly fishing' towards the bottom of the left hand column. www.veals.co.uk/For for dirt cheap mill end lines look at Mullarkey ... www.mullarkeys.co.uk/fishing/search/mill%20end/0/For good advice on how to progress from the basic kit I've described above, look here ... ukswff.proboards26.com/index.cgiGood luck! ;D ;D Allrounder ;D

Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated. I have wanted to try my hand for a while now but was put off by the cost of buying new kit. I'll get on the forum you recommend and get cracking. Once again cheers for the help.

How did you find the Airflop rod, AR? A mate's looking for a reasonably priced SW rod.

To be honest I wouldn't recommend the Airflop SLS to my worst enemy. The rod itself was OK but cheap fittings meant that the screw lock cross threaded after a dozen outings. As with all Airflop products - tread very carefully and avoid the hype! If your mate is looking for a cheap rod then tell him to have a look at this. www.sportfish.co.uk/product/33701/Greys_GRX_Fly_Rod_9ft_0ins_%2356_2pce.htmlI think the Greys GRX has a following among SWFFers and this 3 piece rod looks a good buy for £48.00 plus P&P. The old Delta+ was OK as a cheap introductory SWF rod. I think alot of these 3-piece 9ft 8/9# rods are very similar from Airflo, Greys, Sierra, etc.
As Allrounder states - It's the fittings that can make or break a rod.
