Going with the family to Weymouth the first week in July. Is it worth a go here for some salt water fly fishing? thought I might get a mackerel, or perhaps a bass! Never done it before, more a trout and salmon man but very keen to try. Thought my7/ 8 weight gear should be OK. Do I need a rod license down in England if I only fish the sea? All help greatly received,
Cheers,Graham.

Do I need a rod license down in England if I only fish the sea? Not yet. If you do fish Chesil, make sure you use the steeple cast - or you may find yourself dinging your hook points on all those lovely pebbles! It can be a good spot for Mackerel, especially at last light.

I think there is a similar Chesil thread from last season, anyway my experience is that the number of feather fishermen will be building in early July, so you may have to walk a bit to get some room for fly casting and quieter water.
In anything other than calm conditions it's a real challenge to fish off the Chesil with the fly but the mackerel do come in close to the shore - better on a high tide that coincides with dawn or dusk.
Good luck!
