Is it just me or are Peacock eyes getting smaller. I have just spent a frustrating evening stripping quills. The eyes, from various suppliers, are good quality and well died, but they are all of the same small size. I may be wrong, but these smaller eyes seem to be more brittle. For every one I strip, I break two.

I have noticed the same thing. The large eyes must be out there somewhere - probably being creamed off by the hat trade or such like!! That said we might be lucky to get the small eyes soon - as they are a banned import now due to bird flu restrictions.

Yes, they have been a banned export now. and your right that they are getting smaller. Getting the longest stems will become harder and harder. regular peacock herl should be safe for now.

Time to buy a peacock and a peahen and solve all your problems. Seriously, there can't be many birds, who's feathers are used in tying, that can't be reared in the U.K.?

A friend of mine has some stripped herl from eyes he bought in the early 50's It bears no resemblance to what we use today. Thicker stronger wider better marked. Trouble is he just will not part with it. He says that as demand increases the feathers are coming from younger birds. Don't know if it is true but.......
Cheers Alan.
