Eveving all,
Looking for recommendations for a digital compact that will have the capability of photographing flies in natural light. I'll be looking for a resolution of 5 meg+, a reasonable zoom and some form of manual override is preferable. Any ideas? ;D

i am using a canon powershot a410. it is only 3.2 megapixels. but at a little over £100 out of argos it isnt bad. it produces pics like this with a little work. the flash is a bit harsh but a bit kitchen paper held over it subdues it enough for my pics at the vice. hope this helps. wullie

I use a Pentax Optio 43WR but others to look at would be the Optio WPi, Optio wP10 and the Olympus 720 SW. Sample from the 43WR

Many thanks for the recommendations. Definately some food for thought. Must admit, I'm quite shocked by the quality of the photo's. Having spent 8 years with my own photographic business running a Canon EOS 1n outfit I didnt really expect digi comacts too be up to speed. ;D

skinhead, can you not get a digital back for the eos1n. or trade up to eos30d. you would expect the thick end of 300 quid for the eos1. 30d still a bit pricey at app £700, but you can use all your ef lenses with it.

You can see some good reviews of cameras at this site : www.steves-digicams.comIMO the best camera review site on the web. IMHO Steves Digicams is very very good, the only better website is: www.dpreview.comFor taking pictures of flies, I use an old Nikon 990 compact, because it has an excellent macro lens and an incredible depth of field, making it easier than using my Nikon D-SLRs. In fact, the quality of the macro end of the lens is one thing the Nikon compacts are well known for.

As a trade in I was recently quoted £470, that was for a FULL kit, inc body, 3 lenses, Canon ML3 ring flash, 2 metz flashes, Minolta flash / ambient meter with booster kit, Benbo tripod etc. A mate of mine offered me a higher price, so he got the kit. The cash went on another item of sporting equipment.
