I have started making my own popper bodies.
I cut rough blocks of ethafoam and insert a heavy needle through the centre. I then use a "Dremmell"/electric drill as a lathe and shape the revolving block using a bit of sandpaper. This produces nice symetrical bodies. I then colour with markers, add eyes and seal with Softex.
Rather than using a (big) hook I insert a length of Scoobie tubing through the centre of the body a la tube fly, this keeps the weight down and puts the hook right at the tail of the fly for those tail nippers.
Also, for added "pop" I am going to try mounting a "Wiggle fin" on the front (just waiting for the pack I ordered to arrive).
This may be old news to you guys but it is new to me.

nobuzz, Why not get the camera out and do a step by step of your way with poppers. I for one would like to see how you do this. Cheers, doonicus

Brilliant nobuzz! I haven't heard of the scoobi trick yet! This basically makes all those specialty popper hooks obsolete!

Thought this was a fly tying Forum? No way can that be classed as a fly and before you start, i'm not a purist.

Ben,
I should have seen that one coming.
If it makes you feel better I promise not to use it for Trout, salmon or sea trout.
This is really an idea primarily aimed at Pike and SWFF.
I'm going to go now and flagelate myself with a birch for trying to be helpful.

I'm going to go now and flagelate myself with a birch for trying to be helpful. Don't do that, nobuzz. Hold your head up high in the knowledge that at least you (unlike the unimaginative, humourless, hidebound bigots who still try to keep much of British flyfishing back in an imagined Victorian and Edwardian "Heyday", if not actually the Stone Age) have tried summat new (how they hate that).

An even easier popper is the Hot Lips fly- search Flyanglers Online for the recipe.

You are right Ben, I have seen the error of my ways.
I shall go forth and spread the gospel of Halford et al.
I shall dump my poppers.
I shall dump my Dog Nobblers, my Blobs and my Boobies.
I shall dump my Cats Whiskers, my Vivas and my Whiskey Flies.
I shall dump my Golden Olive Bumbles, Silver Dabblers and Claret Bumbles.
I shall dump my Dunkelds, my Teal Blue and Silvers and my Alexandras.
I shall dump all flies which don't closely resemble an invertibrate, Caddis, Buzzer or Mayfly.
I shall dump..... ? (S**t nothing left in my fly box to dump).
I shall back-off, because I generally agree with where you are coming from. Like I said these monstrosities are primarily for Pike and SWFF and as such are pretty close imitations of bait fish.
ps. Please take this in the spirit it is intended.

You forgot one, nobuzz - that classic rendered not only Kosher but also Immortal by Great British Angling Literature (i.e. books okayed by 'Trite & Salmon' Magazine) - the Falkus Surface Lure.

Yeah, at least I try to make my wake fly look like a fish.

Sounds great to me nobuzz. Would definitely work for sea-trout, where, for reference of those that are giving you a hard-time, the fish wouldn't be able to distinguish if it was an exact imitation or not, as they rarely see anything except silhouette. Hugh Falkus used a twig, great looking imitation Keep tying, and keep up the thinking TT.
