I've taken the liberty of copying Drunken Dun's message that was 'pinned' on the F&F Forums - I hope he doesn't mind...
There are currently opportunities for fly fishermen in Scotland to join a one day workshop:
Workshop: Riverfly identification, survey and monitoring Workshop
Location: River Leader, Nr Melrose
Date: Wednesday 2 or Thursday 3 July 2003
Please contact: Bridget Peacock (contact details below) as soon as possible, if you are interested to participate.
Workshop outline
· Sampling and monitoring of riverflies (practical demonstrations on the river bank)
· Background to the life history and ecology of up-winged flies, sedges and stoneflies
· Practical sessions on fly identification sorting the catch and identification of nymphs and adults up-winged flies and sedges.
The workshops, as highlighted in recent articles in Salmo Trutta and Fly Fishing and Fly Tying, are being delivered by a collaborative team, comprising the national recording officers for Ephemeroptera (mayflies or up-winged flies) Trichoptera (caddisflies or sedges) and Plecoptera (stoneflies), specialists from The Natural History Museum and The John Spedan Lewis Trust for the Advancement of the Natural Sciences.
No background knowledge is required however places are allocated to fly fishermen that are keen to pursue a long term interest in identifying the fly life on the local rivers they fish and have an interest to feed back data to the national recording schemes.
There is no charge for the workshop, which is kindly being supported by Scottish Natural Heritage and the organisations mentioned above.
Please contact: Bridget Peacock: Invertebrate Biodiversity Co-ordinator, UK Biodiversity Programme, The Natural History Museum on tel: 020 7942 5932 or via email: b.peacock@nhm.ac.uk.
