Gentlemen, Anyone have information on salmon fishing on the River Bush near the Bushmills Distillery? Am about to take up salmon fishing and have an opportunity to visit the aforementioned within the next month or so. Any info/help you can give ref ideal kit to take i.e. is it wide/narrow/deep/shallow plus "successful" flies (told you I was new to this) would be most welcome. Many thanks

Peter O'reilly's book - rivers of Ireland gives you alot of information about permits and such for most of Ireland, including the Bush. I've had the luck to fish the pool on P'Balintrae beach, in fact the Bush is just a beautiful river plain and simple. I fished the free trout fishing up in the hills too, magical...
Anyway, the book is ISBN: 1-873674-53-8
there are 3 stretches to the river, well according to O'Reilly anyway:
Dundrave Estates water from the river mouth inland about 2 miles - Dundrave Estates Ltd. 028 20731215
The Day ticket Stretch. 3 main beats of varying quality. - Fishery Office, River Bush Salmon Station, 02820731435
Unrestricted stretch. Upstream of Walkmills, past villages of Dervock, Stranocum and Ardmoy. Over 18's need a DCAL game fishing permit. Lovely trout waters
Hope that helps
Malcolm

dundrave estates would be your best bet at this time of year. its very early for the bush and it a river sadly in decline for salmon anyway.
the dundrave bit is at the estuary and its quite expensive depending on time of year £50 odd. rrw on here fished it last year and caught some nice sea trout and lost a salmon. but as i say its early.
phone the salmon station at bushmills for current permit prices 028 2073 1435
not sure there wil be any salmon worth talking about in the river yet. maybe fishing for trout in the upper reaches would be your best bet

I fished the bottom end at the sea pool last year during the family holiday. Lost a grilse about 3lb at the sea pool and caught a lot of small sea-trout and browns in the sea pool. Lovely bit of water...you can see the fish coming in on the tide. Sadly the Bush has been in decline over the last few years. Go to the distillery and take the whisky tour..... Its nice water, and worth a throw. But the Dundarve stretch is £53 a throw. I treated myself as i was on holiday, but really, its a bit of a waste.... Its sad to see it decline, as the salmon station has put a lot of effort into the project, and the river is beautiful to fish. If you fish it, use size 14 or 16 flies in low water in the summer. Its called the "holy water", at the bottom end. Hugh Falkus once fished it, which was enough for me.. Walking in the footsteps of the greats in beautiful surroundings is a nice experience. I hear the department of agriculture are talking over the water this year, so be prepared for fuckwits with Pike floats prawning it year round. The bottom line is...its been poor for springers, but is nice trout water all year. TAKE THE DISTILLERY TOUR!!! In April, i would use a size 8 Cascade or Currys Red Shrimp. It is'nt really that deep, probably averages about 3ft. To be honest, you would be better having a crack at the trout. The Town stretch (near the distillery) is very nice water though. Good luck anyway, and enjoy the whisky..i recommend the 10 year malt!
